Do All Business Areas and Math Go Together

All right, so I’m interested in a couple of areas that deal with business such as media and entertainment, apparel/retail, and cosmetics and skin care. Do these put a lot of emphasis in math? What math, if any, would you have to do in a position of leadership or power? Do CEOs deal with math, or is that part generally left to accountants?

Thank you

First off, math in business is generally not overly complicated.

As a CEO, you will not need to create financial models (for instance). However, you will need to understand finance. You will need to know which questions to ask when deciding whether to move forward with a project or not. You will also need to understand finance when trying to sell investors on contributing capital to your company.

Even if you started your management career in marketing (for example) you will need to do basic math. You will need to be able to create budgets and you will need to do various calculations like Customer Lifetime Value etc.

Additionally, who is going to approve your projects if you don’t have numbers to back them up? Not many will. So, you will need to sell other stakeholders on your ideas, and you will do so with numbers that back up your position.

You do not need extensive training in mathematics in the traditional sense (for most business jobs). You really just need to be able to understand what the numbers mean. However, with the areas you mentioned, it really depends on what you do in those areas. There are finance departments in all of those industries. It really depends on what sector you go into more so than just what industry you go into.
