do all colleges have a public student directory?

I mean a tool to look up students?

I thought all colleges had one, but some only seem to have a faculty/staff search

also the ones that do have one seem to be only for current students??

It probably depends on the college.

I was actually surprised to find out that my college has one. The only reason I knew it did was because my boss was trying to get a hold of me and she ended up looking me up and my house number was listed. My mom, who was 100 miles away, answered.

And I’m pretty sure ours is just current students.

Mine does, but we have the option of opting out so only people you know know where you live.

I was under the impression that all colleges had a student directory, but it may not be accessible to the public.

My undergraduate college’s student directory is password protected. We can access it through the same system that we use to register for classes. But only while classes are in session; it goes offline during breaks. (I learned of this policy when I wanted to write postcards from my winter break trip…)

I also know colleges that still use old-fashioned paper directories.

I haven’t been able to look up students at my college…only professors and staff, unless i’m doing something wrong

Some of my friends go to UC’s and they DO have public student directories but it seems like it’s only for current students, once they graduate they’re no longer on there lol

Yeah, most schools have them. But some don’t, or if they do, they require you to call in or something. My school have a student and staff directory online, but ask your school !

It seems like CSU’s don’t have them

yea a lot of colleges do. depending where you go might depend on how much info they give

I just looked and we do have a public directory on the Web site; I used myself as the guinea pig. We can find fellow students as well as staff. It will tell us the person’s name, in-session address & phone number, as well as year, major, and e-mail. However, when playing under my student account I found the spot where I can suppress my in-session address, phone, and/or my school e-mail from the directory.

I like how it gives us the choice of what to show or not show. It also tells you who to contact if you are suppressing the information due to harassment or stalking.

^wait, do you go to a CSU?

^ I’m not sure what CSU means but I’m assuming a California State Uni? Or another state that starts with C. But I go to a Iowa University.

My college has a combined student/staff one. I actually used it just to find out where my roommate was from (I’m in the same dorm as the International students, so this could have been pretty important) since I couldn’t find him on Facebook.

Swarthmore probably has the most creepy student directory of all time. Every student has a picture, name, dorm room, and class year available online. You can search by dorm, floor, initials, name, class year, etc. Beyond creepy.
