I’ve been wondering whether or not boarding schools actually practice affirmative action. Do they?
Affirmative action is a term more often applied to government policy. It is geared toward correcting past discrimination. Schools aren’t directly trying to “fix” any past wrongs, but are instead seeking diverse student bodies that are representative of ALL of society. In that pursuit, they will show preference toward under represented minorities (URMs). Remember, they are building communities, not filling dorms with the highest SSAT scores.
@Altras Thanks for the clarification.
Yes, and they love to have candidates who can add diversity. This adds to the community. There are kids from many countries, of various economic and racial identities and also kids who represent talents which are not all the same ( some kids are theater kids and some are art kids etc). This makes for a vibrant community with a lot going on.
