Do colleges check your volunteer/extracurricular activites?

Hey guys,

Do colleges check your extracurricular activities/volunteer work?

I have some questions I need to ask.

Ok… I played only three years of football in high school because I got seriously injured during one of my high school years during training camp, but I’m tempted to put four years (I’m playing this year.)

At my school, there isn’t really a “Spanish Club”; however, the school does hold many Spanish-based activities and events – such as the Latin Dance Competition, Spanish Review Session, and the Multicultural Show. Anyways… I always show up, help, bring food, and coordinate some of these events. Can I put that I was apart of the Spanish Club even though it was not literally called the “Spanish Club” even though that’s what it practically was.

Thanks!

i think putting 4 years for the football thing is legit. u got injured in training camp and i guess u were still part of the club…just under the injured status. its a bit of a stretch…but okay.

the spanish club thing, i don’t think that’s legit. school activites are a bit different that clubs. i would not want to lie and regret it in the future. college is a big step of one’s life and honesty will be the most satisfying in the future.

You can say you “coordinated spanish cultural events” and such, because that’s true. Spanish club is lying though.

The major way colleges can discern that something is suspicious is through your teacher recs and essays. If you say you are a major leader in the school but your teachers never mention any of this and use adjectives such as “shy” and so on, well, you get the idea!

Good luck! You should also talk to your Spanish teacher or whoever is associated with those Spanish events and ask them what they suggest…?
