My son has been accepted to his second choice college and is still waiting to hear from his first choice school which probably he will not hear from until the first week of April. If we submit a deposit to the college he has been accepted to in order to get a good dorm choice is it possible for his 1st choice college to find out and influence their decision to accept him? Both colleges are private colleges.

In the book “A is for Admission” the asst Dean of Dartmouth said that they only time that colleges communicate among themselves is when a kid has applied ED. As soon as that kid is accepted then they communicate that with all the peer colleges. She also said colleges are much too busy doing work to communicate about individual students.

Its perfectly acceptable to place a non refundable deposit down by May 1st and then change your mind if a “better” college offers you an opening.
