I know that we live in an era of schools that are yield obsessed.
With that in mind, do schools know how many schools a student is applying to?
I have heard that schools cannot glean this information from the Common App, but CAN get this information from CSS.
Does anyone know for sure?

No.
Knowing is one thing, what do they do with that info is another.
From seeing posts from admitted students who get in many many of the same tier type schools, I would guess even if they know (which I don’t think they do), it probably doesn’t matter for YOUR chance of admission.

They don’t know unless you tell them.
About a decade ago there was a scandal where colleges were seeing all the colleges listed on FAFSA applications and some used that (including order) to infer student preference. These days colleges don’t see the other colleges listed.
