Do connections help with college admission?

So I was talking to my grandpa about college and it turns out he’s very good friends with the Dean of the Engineering school at Villanova and thinks this could help me get into the business school, I was wondering if he is right or not?

Certainly possible, but clearly depends not only on how strong the relationship is between your grandpa and the Dean of the Engineering school, but also on the relationship between the Dean of the Engineering school and the Dean of the business school. No way of anyone here knowing the answer to those questions.

I agree with what tdy123 says above. But I would add that your chances also depend on how strong your credentials are, because if your stats are near the bottom of the typical entering class a strong connection between your grandpa and the dean won’t likely matter. On the other hand, if you are a strong applicant then that connection might tip the scales in your favor. The connection is just another thing to add to the mix when viewing your application holistically.

I agree with the above posts. Connections help when you have stats on the upper end. A little less helpful if your stats are at the bottom range. Certainly can’t hurt to try. If Villanova is somewhere you want to be it’s worth a shot.

Or the dean could become angry at your grandpa and break off the friendship, especially if your stats are substandard.

Im right about average slightly below the usual for business 30 act the average is 31

Getting the ACT up to 32 if possible would be in your favor for VSB.
