Do employers care if your degree doesn't relate to design ?

I heard that in design field, whether it is 3D modeling and animation, graphic design, illustration etc etc, employers don’t care much of your degree, rather, your portfolio. I even heard that employers dont even care if you dont have a degree as long as your portfolio is good. Is that true ?

I was an Animation major for one year. While I was there, the courses that use computers (not drawing classes) basically just teach me on how to use software. “Click this and you will get this”, “turn this up and you will get this”, “add more edge loop will make the edge more crisp”, all and all and I feel those are something that can be learned on your own when you get a book on your own or go online tutorials.

Thus, I decide to major in something, like Accounting, then learn 3D modeling on my own time. I was at a forum called CGSociety, and learned that most of the people that post good 3D artwork, are self-taught.

But anyway, will employers care if my degree is not saying “Bachelor in Animation” or “Bachelor in Graphic Design” ?
