Do first semester course choices affect transfer chances?

Do the types of classes I take during my first semester of college affect the chances I have of being able to transfer, say from Skidmore to Brandeis? Would Brandeis look for a variety of classes during the first semester? Is taking no math or science courses any worse than taking some during the first semester?
