I have a 2.7 GPA and a 20 ACT My mother moved around a lot after her divorce from my stepfather my freshamn year. We We were constantly in homeless shelters and I was constantly going to different high schools. It really took a toll on me emotionally. I’m a very smart girl and hard working, I hate myself for not focusing on school more and letting my home life effect my education. But my GPA really dropped Junior year. I was sexually abused by a teacher from my previous school Junior year.I was too ashamed and afraid to tell anyone and it really affected me. I lost hope and I became very depressed. I felt this way until two months ago when I finally had the courage to report what happened to me. I really want to go to this. I don’t want my past to define me, I’ve been through so much and I want a better future for myself. I will be a first- generation African American student.
Clubs: Student Council, Editor of School Newspaper, Key Club,
I wrote a good essay and I also listed my circumstances in my application. Do I have a chance at getting accepted? I put my major as Communications.
That’s really horrible! I hope that you got in.
What does your GPA look like for this semester?
Acceptances came out a few days ago, and I really hope she was one of them.
@musiclover131 I didn’t get in unfortunately I am crushed. I guess I was too stupid to get in.
@Bughunter87 it’s a 2.7 now.
I’m very sorry MarieHolland. Please don’t give up. UIUC is not an easy school to get into. Thousands of excellent kids are denied each year. Your story is compelling and heartbreaking but the school was probably looking for evidence that if admitted you now would be able to do the work, which is challenging. They use scores to provide them with that reassurance and yours were probably still too low this time.
If you go to a different school for a year and get your GPA up, your chances will be much better and you could try for a transfer in. It will take a lot of hard work. You are going to want to improve your ACT scores and GPA as well as expand your ECs to improve your chances. It won’t be a sure thing even then. Even students with near perfect scores apply to this school with their fingers crossed because they know a UIUC admission is never a sure thing. Too many apply.
@Bughunter87 Do you think I could get accepted to Illinois State?
I would only be guessing, but you are closer to the average there. I would also take a look at Northern Illinois University or a little a local community college.
I would take ISU over NIU. I’ve heard horror stories about NIU. I think you would get accepted to ISU, and maybe transfer after two years?
@musiclover131 Thanks for the input, I thought about transferring to the University of Illinois in Champaign, University of Iowa, or University of Florida. Or I might like Illinois State enough to stay. University of Iowa had said they were going to accept me but for some reqson wvwn after hearing shout my circumstances, changed their mind, they even kept mentiong my financial ais in their decision.
