<p>Significant Extracurriculars-</p>

<p>Youth Making a Difference-Non-Profit Organization. I am involved in a year-long service program that prepares you to be a leader. The youth in the group plan, fundraise, organize and execute a humanitarian aid trip to Northern India’s orphans. </p>

<p>Seminary Council: of my high school. I represent a stake in the LDS church. I help plan assemblies, service activities, and talk. </p>

<p>Chamber Orchestra: I have been involved in school orchestra playing the viola for six years. I skipped a year into an advanced orchestra. I have been in the best orchestra possible at school for two years: Chamber. I have not had private lessons but, work hard on my own.I am first chair. SHS went to New Mexico for a National Compeition and won second place in public high school catagory.
I have only earned 1+s and 1s in State and Region Festivals. I have also been a manager of the orchestra legistics, music and equipment for a year. For this service, I received a Certificate of Service. </p>

<p>Nebo Youth Symphony: I was involved with my districts orchestra for about a year and a half. I was first chair. Received a lot of one on one help and was a leader to younger, inexperienced player. Received the Best Lower String Award. </p>

<p>Hopikido Martial Arts: I have an orange belt in Hopikido. I have involved in martial arts for about a year. </p>

<p>Church Presidency: I have been a leader in my youth group in my LDS church for four years in various leadership positions. </p>

<p>Internship: At my local hospital for a semester in the Emergency Room and the Continual Care Departments. </p>

<p>Honors and Awards: Honor Roll Student Award every year, Certified Nurse Assistant, Certified in CPR. </p>

<p>Work: I have working since I was fifteen years old. Every summer full time. </p>

<p>I know my ACT score is really low and I took AP classes and murdered my GPA. But, it was hard to get money and waivers to pay for the ACT the first time and I wanted the colleges to know I am a good student. I applied for the University of Utah. Just in case I didn’t get into BYU or any other schools I applied for. I have a hard past and I am a minority. My mother has food stamps and child support from my father. Some of the classes I took in HS have college credit.</p>

<p>What URM are you? I don’t think you have a good chance at Columbia.</p>

<p>Your grades and scores aren’t stellar–I’d lower your sights and focus on a school that will really embrace your music talent in spite of a few academic glitches.</p>

Unless a Columbia Music Prof handpicks you out, I really don’t see it.</p>

<p>Wow, a lot of negative you’re getting! You do have some things on your side. You’re very involved, and you are a minority. It’s not necessarily all about the grades. Your gpa is decent, and the universities will be looking at the type of classes you took, then the grades, then if you took the ap tests, and if you passed. I am concerned about your ACT score. It is on the low side, and that can play against you. You need to take the SAT’s. But don’t give up hope because some people on here (and some of them don’t even have the right to be talking since they aren’t even students) are telling you that you won’t get it. Make yourself unique, stand out! If your essays or recommendations are stellar you stand a chance. And if you don’t get in, at least you weren’t afraid to try. Best of luck to you Jem!</p>

<p>Columbia is definitely a reach for you, it’s not impossible but your ACT score needs to be at least like 32 and and your GPA needs to be well above a 4.0. that school is one of the most competitive ones in the country and thousands get rejected with much higher test scores and GPA’s than you. i’m sorry!! but if you don’t get in this fall you can always transfer later.</p>

<p>I got into The University of Utah! I knew I didn’t have much of a chance. But, I think I’ll work really hard and get in when I get my BA! Thanks for the advice!</p>

<p>Congratulations on utah!! (: it feels great to get an acceptance lol. Yeah you can always transfer if columbia’s still your dream school.</p>

<p>I think you mistyped your ACT score. It says 24 instead of 34. And apart from that, your ECs are meh :/, and unless your score is like an extremely hard school, I don’t think you have that high of a chance :/. But good luck to you anyways :D</p>
