Do I have a chance with a 2.8 gpa (uw)?

My gpa sucks but everything else is pretty good.
SAT 1: 1910 (retaking in dec)
SAT 2: Lit-670, US History-650
APUSH: 3
AP Psychology: 5
In progress: AP ENglish, AP Music Theory

EC’s

 1. 4 years of cross country, 3 years in varsity: Last weekend at NCS our girl’s team placed 3rd in Div 1. Unfortunately Div 1 was the only div to take top 2 teams for state championships.
 2. 11 years of piano: Complete all levels (0-10) for the Certificate of Merit test. Am currently learning how to keyboard so I can lead worship at my church.
 3. 4 years of Youth Group: extensive participation in my youth group.
 4. Link Crew Leader (12th): mentoring freshman
 5. 4 years of Track n’ Field, 3 years varsity: uumm yea. xc is more of my forte.
 6. Community College courses: I took some for personnal enrichment because I was bored over the summer. I’ve also taken some to make up my D’s.

Volunteer hours: Over 100. Documented hours: 87. By the time I graduate I’ll have close to 200.

Other stuff:

 1. Single parent household
 2. Really low income.
 3. Overcame adversity
 4. Good essays
 5. Got 2 D’s. I made one up and got a B. I’m currently making up the other one at a community college.

UCSD is my top choice UC, but I know it’ll take a miracle for me to be accepted. I’ve been looking at UCSC and UCM. Those have lower admission standards. Do I have what it takes to be admitted? I’ve been checking out some state schools as well: Chico, San Jose, and Cal Poly Pomona.

Your low gpa will severely hurt your chances at UCSD because their admissions system is highly gpa and sat score driven, accounting for 76% of their decision.

You MIGHT be able to get in if you have a VERY good reason for such a low gpa (i.e. your parents died). I just hope you’re in-state

Not likely; under UCSD’s comprehensive review forumula, that would give him a max of 500pts for Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges.

Well, pacific_fleet you are on the right track on why my gpa is low. However unlimitedx does bring up a good point and even w/ my adversities will probably not make up for a low gpa. How about UCSC and UCM? I hope I have a decent chance of getting into one of those.

they will be reaches as well champ.

As far as I know, UCSC has a similar comprehensive review formula in which GPA and SAT counts for 50%+.

Remember that freshmen year grades do not count.

See how many pts you think you score under this formula:
http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html</a></p>

The cut off point is ~7500pts.

Hmmm well I guess I’m out of luck. Too late now I already applied. But I don’t like how everything is determined by numbers. How can they put a numeric value on hardships or talent? Doesn’t make sense.

Consider transfering.
