Hey, my school offers 11 APs and I’ve taken 7 APs and a bunch of honors courses and one research internship my school offers. The average amount of APs people take in my school is 8-9. Will this look bad towards Ivy League schools?
If you don’t get accepted to Ivy League schools, or do…you will never know why or why not.
In my opinion, the number of APs you plan to take is fine. But more important are your course grades.
Most people do not get accepted to Ivy League schools. Many students with top notch grades and test scores and tons of APs get turned down every year. Apply if you want to but realize they are a reach for every student.
I would say find the equilibrium where you get the best grades possible for the number of APs. My child has 14 APs and 1 DE and still rejected by T20-30 such as Wash U, UVA and UND. It really just depends on other factors. One thing AOs do look at is whether you have “challenged” yourself from what’s available to you. Good luck.
If other high achieving students are taking 8 on average and you are taking 7, the number is unlikely to be disqualifying. What may matter more is the quality, rigor, and relevance of the AP classes you choose. For instance, if the competitive students are taking AP Calculus BC and you have AB, or their AP sciences are chem/bio/physics and your science is APES, those aren’t comparable schedules even if the number of AP classes is similar.
Next week is Ivy Day (3/28), Look thru the posted stats and decide if you have a chance.
Will it look bad - no, I don’t think so.
Do you have a chance? Yes, if you apply and no if you don’t - but why Ivy? it’s a sports league.
Find the type of college that’s right for you - the Ivies are as different as they are similar.
Good luck.
PS - GPA and rigor are just two of many components that make a competitive applicant - so there will have to be a lot more in your portfolio, for many competitive schools, Ivy and beyond.
