Do I Have a Decent Chance?

I am currently a junior and I have a 4.0 this semester but my cumulative GPA will still be in the mid 3.0-4.0 range. I have good extracurriculars and I plan on getting a high score on the SAT/ACT. I was thinking that if I maintain my 4.0 until senior year and if I score high enough to qualify for admission by exam I have a good chance of being admitted and my academics surpass all UC requirements too.

See this link if you’re wondering what admission by exam is: [Admission by exam | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination/)

Really depends on the major you are applying to. In most “impacted” majors, you will be competing with those “perfect” students. Keep in mind that for this year, the average GPA of UCSD’s accepted students are 4.1 (weighted) and SAT of 1990.

If your SAT is over 2200, I would say that score should balance out your 3.5 GPA. Otherwise, even at 2000, I am afraid that you will not be consider as at par with the average admitted student. With that said, every student situation is different. If you can explain why you got a low GPA in your sophomore year (sickness? family/financial issues?), you may win some hearts. Girlfriend/boyfriend issues as well as drug/addiction (including computer game addiction) are not the best excuses for your grades.

The major you pick does not affect your chances of getting into UCSD.

Well I was a gym rat up until the end of first semester of sophomore year when I realized that I was messing up, and this is not going to be on my personal essay. I plan on going in undeclared as the major I want to pick has special restrictions and I can choose that major later in college.

Don’t do that! It is much easier to get into the major if you apply the first time then trying to get in later. If you don’t get in, you will be admitted as undeclared, so no problem. Applying to an impacted major WILL NOT hurt your chances of getting into the university. That plan WILL NOT help you get into the university or the major. I’m officially warning you not to do that. At least for UCSD. Just to let you know. :)
