Do I have a "hook" for Brown?

Texas residence
LGBT family
Jewish background

…I’m not asking you to “chance” me, I’m just wondering if these factors would be considered hooks at Brown.

And if not at Brown, what about UChi?

Thanks :)

A quick glance at admission stats says that Texas is probably not a hook - a large number of students from the South enroll at Brown each year in comparison to students from the Midwest and Plains (although the number is smaller than New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the California area.

The Hillel Organization estimates that something like 20-25% of Brown students have a Jewish background, which doesn’t feel like a hook to me either.

No idea about your family, since I can’t find numbers for that. If I had to guess, hook wouldn’t be the right word, but it could be beneficial if it comes across in a well-written manner.

LGBT family I feel like stands out, which may or may not be a hook. However, it definitely DOESN’T hurt at all.

In terms of “hook”, no, you don’t have a conventional hook. But if you write an essay that showcases the uniqueness of your situation, then officers would see that in the same way they would see a traditional “hook”, like URM or legacy.

Okay awesome, thanks!
