Do I have a shot at getting into UVA?

Hi!

I’m a current high school junior in Kentucky. The University of Virginia is my top choice school right now, and I was hoping for some opinions on whether my chances of acceptance are good.

First and foremost, I attend an alternative school- not a “bad kids’” school, but something called middle college. Basically, I attend school on a 4-year college campus, follow a college schedule (e.g., I have three classes MWF and three TR at various times), and earn college credit as I complete my high school courses. This is the first year of the only program of its kind in the state and is considered a somewhat prestigious program because of its advanced difficulty. By the time I graduate, I will have accumulated around 20 college credits through university courses and AP exams.

I have maintained a 4.0 or above GPA throughout high school and I always take the hardest courses available (AP, honors, and CP). The lowest grade I’ve ever gotten, a 92, was last year in Honors Algebra II. Last year, my class rank was 4/287, and this year it is 1/37.

I took the ACT last year as a sophomore and got a 27 (31 English, 34 reading, 24 science, and 19 math). I took it again this year and got a 31 (34 English, 36 reading, 29 science, and 25 math). (As you can see, math is not my strong point.) I plan to take it one more time to try for a 34 or better, and I might take the SAT if I determine that it’s necessary.

I plan to major in computer science. To that end, I registered for an introduction to computer programming course at my university for next semester and am currently taking the most difficult math classes I am offered (precalculus this year and AP calculus next year).

My extra-curriculars are… not so hot. Freshman year I was in marching band and on the academic team; sophomore year I was on the academic team, in Spanish club, and a member of Beta club; and, since no sports or clubs are offered through my program this year, I have been involved in none.

Nevertheless, I am very active outside of the classroom. I’ve headed several collaborative projects this year, such as preparing and presenting a summary of my program’s achievements to the county Board of Education, and preparing a mentoring system for the juniors that will be joining middle college next year. I am also part of a group that is in the process of forming a student government for next year, and I plan to run for president once that’s done.

I have volunteered a lot in my community, but unfortunately I never recorded or got proof of those occasions. For instance, in ninth grade I was part of a group that campaigned in the community to raise support for the financially failing public library. Also at the library, I frequently assisted the librarians with organization, decoration, and organizing events. I spent more than three hours almost each day doing this, year-round. I never had any forms or anything signed by the librarians, however, and as I moved from that town it would be difficult for me to contact them and get proof of my service.

This summer I plan to throw myself completely into volunteer work, maybe at the library or the local animal shelter. Next year I will be taking AP English, AP calculus, chemistry (and the AP test), Spanish 201 (and the AP test), Intro. to Programming, a WWII class, and two other college classes second semester that I haven’t yet chosen. I will also try to take the AP tests for biology and US history.

Thank you so much in advance for your input! And, if you think my chances of getting admitted to UVA aren’t too great, could you recommend a good university that you think WOULD be attainable?
