Do I have a shot?

I’m currently a junior in high school and I really want to go to Stanford. I’m hardly relying on the possibility (if any). I’ve been casually reading about my other options lately, which are UC Berkeley, University of Michigan, Santa Clara University, UC Davis, and possibly University of Santo Tomas. My heart is really set on music and medicine, so I plan to major in music while taking pre-med prerequisites. I don’t know if that’s the most logical plan, but I’m really passionate about music and I really want to become a doctor.

In short, I want to know if I have a shot at Stanford, or any of the other universities that I mentioned. I’ve been told yes by some peers and no by others, so I feel that all of you would serve as amazing impartial judges.

It’s encouraged to have a non-medicine related major while taking pre-med. Good job on pursuing your interests.

You’re going to have to do very well on your auditions though.

Hope you got a good score on your SAT, and keep up those grades. If no APs are offered in sophomore year, don’t worry too much about not having them.

Is there any reason why you want to get into Stanford though? If there was, then if you can communicate it to them, you have a chance of acceptance. Make sure you read the prompts carefully and answer everything correctly too, but that’s next year.

There was a person with a 2170 or something like that who got into Stanford this fall, and apparently it was because the person was really into Stanford. Good luck.

Santa Clara University…you should probably be more worried about the amount of money you have to pay.

Are you willing to consider smaller schools? A place like Oberlin might be interesting. Or University of Rochester if you could take music classes at the Eastman school. Check on the music major forum as well for non-conservatory options and places that are a bit easier than Stanford.

I was actually intending on going for a non-performance major; composition and theory to be exact. And I’m probably not good enough to qualify for a performance major, especially since I went about three to four years without lessons. Even if I were, I would have still chosen composition and theory.

As for wanting to go to Stanford, when my family moved to California, my dad got a job in one of Stanford’s medical research facilities and my mom became a nurse in the medical center. As a result, I spent a lot of time on the campus, usually touring around with relatives while waiting for my parents to get off from work. I guess I just got attached to Stanford. I also love being here in the Bay Area and everything just suits me perfectly.

I am a junior member of the Knights of Columbus, and they have some scholarship programs for high schoolers planning to proceed to Catholic universities. Other than that, I wasn’t relying on SCU anyway, so I wouldn’t mind not going. My order of preference is pretty much as follows: Stanford, UC Berkeley or Yale, University of Michigan, [other UCs], Santa Clara University, and maybe University of Santo Tomas.

I visited Yale last Christmas, and I really liked it. I have my doubts about getting in, but there’s no harm in trying. I probably won’t apply to University of Santo Tomas this time around, mostly because I won’t be able to go back to the Philippines for a few more years to take their entrance exams, but I will definitely apply to their medical school.
