Do I HAVE to Update to Windows 10?

Thanks, all. I’m beginning to think I might as well download it and be done. I’m not sure why I’m hesitating, other than I hate new things.

Windows 10 is nice. Nothing wrong with new – speaking as someone who has gone through every darn iteration since MS-DOS. I had discouraged wife from upgrading, but she did it anyway and is very happy. Seems to have fewer problems than with 7.

I have found that Windows 10 got better as it went along. When I first upgraded, when it was first available, it made me hate my laptop, which was just a few months old at the time. I almost went back to 7 but then 10 had a few updates and a lot of the problems disappeared. Now I forget that there was a time that I wanted to throw my brand new laptop against a wall, it works just fine and is as speedy as I need it to be.

Just be prepared…that update can take a LONG time to do. DH helped a friend of mine do it in April. It took hours. But then…she had not kept up with her updates all along, so those needed to be done first.

We actually left town…and the next morning, it was still updating!

If you’ve kept current with other updates, it should only take an hour or so.

Agree…IF your other updates are current…but some folks I know don’t do those either!

I’m planning to schedule it to start when I go to bed.

@thumper1 : Automatic upgrades are either one of the benefits of 10 or a pernicious bane. I guess I’m in the former group since you retain control over WHEN they get installed, and the downloads (which must come in at night when I don’t care anyway) are just waiting for the signal.

@SouthFloridaMom9 , I am another one of the rare windows phone owners. My son had one, liked it and said I might like it too. It’s okay, and I am a big windows/Microsoft fan, but once this one is done, I’ll buy something else.

That said, I like Windows 10 more than 8 and I agree it’s very similar to Windows 7. We were early adopters and it was extremely easy to get used to.

Yes…Windows 10 has auto upgrades. No need to ever remember again.

Last year, DH bought two laptops which both had Windows 8 on them. He sent them both back. Didn’t want to deal, with 8’while waiting for 10 to be released.

Suspect the quickness of the installation is due to Microsoft already having downloaded the entirety of the necessary files. While I was searching for a cure to the constant update notification, I ran across a number of anecdotes about the supposed elective nature of the process being a little misleading.

Some people prefer to have the latest, some would rather deal with the new when they haven’t any other choice. Microsoft, on the other hand, would probably rather not have to bother with legacy issues.

So did you update @veryhappy?

Not yet. I’m waiting for the next annoying prompt, which of course won’t come as soon as I now want it to! And then I’ll schedule it for overnight.

I despise Windows 10! It makes my computer look like a cheap strip mall. It seems like its principal purpose is not to run my programs but to sell me stuff.

@JHS look for the options. I have Windows 10 on my teeny netbook. My husband did the upgrade…but somewhere there is a way to have your opening screen look almost exactly like Windows 7.

Does anyone else hate the feeling that Microsoft controls my computer, not me? The teeney netbook seems to have upgraded itself to 10, but I still have the main computer on 7. I really don’t want to buy new printers to use with 10 - these machines are conveniences for me at this point in my life, not professional use. I’m considering going Mac, just to avoid Microsoft dictating my life. Any thoughts from those more experienced with technology than me? Will I encounter the same frustration from Apple?

I haven’t been able to update, I have tried and after downloading the 3 gig of data, when it goes to install it tells me there was a failure in updating, and asks me to click an icon to see why…which starts the download again! They have a utility to diagnose upgrade problems in windows 8, and when I run it it finds errors, claims to fix it, but when I run it again, it still has the errors…I guess I’ll have to fight with microsoft support to try and get this working. It isn’t my machine, I have a 2 terabyte main drive that has like 1.5T open, it is a quad core with 8 gig memory, so is plenty powerful.

I’m trying to avoid upgrading, because I’ve heard numerous examples of people’s files getting messed up, and especially, of Dropbox not working correctly (or sometimes at all) after the upgrade. I cannot afford for that to happen; DB across several computers is the backbone of my writing life.

When I first upgraded I could not use Skype. But that was one of the things that got better over time, now that program works fine on my laptop. I’m glad I hung in there, but it was very frustrating the first few months! I’m sure the glitches with Windows 10 have all (or mostly) been worked out now.

This thread is timely because to my surprise last night my desktop began to automatically download and install Windows 10. I didn’t intend to install W10 but I maybe I inadvertently hit the mouse at the wrong moment. Anyway, thank goodness that after the initial download, W10 prompted me to “accept or decline.” I declined and thus the computer began to uninstall W10. Did I really hit the wrong button or is this Microsoft issuing an upgrade by fiat?
