I don’t want it either, I have two very old but critical programs I need to run. I’m on 7 and have zero issues with it.
The way to avoid Win 10 auto updating was to disable that in my settings. But it still pops up to ask me every now and then.

I don’t think you did anything, LW. I deleted all the pop-ups asking me to update to Win10, but it still started downloading it without my asking it to. Glad to hear that you’re prompted to accept or decline should it download without wanting it.
We changed the Windows 10 startup to the classic view by going to ninite.com and choosing the link for classic view. I hated the Windows 10 look and now my files etc are back to the way I used them in 7. There are other program links on that site. Our office programmer recommended ninite to us.
Update from the OP: I downloaded and installed it overnight last night. The sun still came up this morning, and I can still use my computer. I don’t hate it. It seems OK. I can’t tell any difference in functionality, but we’ll see, won’t we.
it’s going to be fine, VH!
Does anyone know how long we have to complete the upgrade for free?
Prompted by this thread, I upgraded a couple days ago. So far, no issues.
Has anyone actually tried using Microsoft Edge? I made Chrome my default without giving Edge a shot.
^I used Microsoft Edge for a few weeks after the upgrading to Windows 10 and wasn’t impressed. Just didn’t care for the layout and it seemed sluggish at times. I’m using Opera now because of the built in ad blocker (which I love) and because it will very soon include a built in VPN client. It isn’t sluggish at all - I really thought it might have been my laptop but those issues went away when I switched to Opera. Just my opinion, others may have had a different experience.
FWIW, I like Windows 10. Much, much better than the whole 8, 8.1 fiasco…
I read someplace that it is ending soon, I saw something a day or two ago on that. You could probably Google and find out. I was nervous about my upgrade. And for a week or so my computer seemed slower, but that problem seems to have gone away. Like someone who posted above, I had an old printer I was just using for scanning, and it stopped working because there are no drivers for Windows 10. So I ordered a new flatbed scanner for under $100 (takes up less space, I had been thinking about it anyway). All my other software seemed to work fine without problems. I had been worried about my old Quicken and Quickbooks, but don’t see any issues with them. So… I’d take the plunge. It is more like Windows 7 than Windows 8 (hideous detour in the laptop user interface, that is what I think of 8!), and now that I am over the hump I am fine.
We thought Wondows 8 was horrible. So we just stuck with Wondows 7
My H switched to 10 a while ago and did not like that for some reason he had to log on every single time he used the computer. It also made him create an outlook account which he didn’t want or need. So he switched back after a week or so.
I just used Never10 to stop the change from happening (I am happy with 7). It also removes all of the files that were preloaded by microsoft in preparation for the upgrade.
I wonder how long Microsoft will continue to support 7? I mean…I really liked XP?..but I had to give that one up.
@thumper1, we are still talking about the great Thanksgiving Weekend Debacle from the year my 87 year old dad asked me to help him upgrade from XP to 8 over the holiday. It took the entire 4 day weekend to get it to a semi-usable state. I, too, stayed with 7 and recently skipped right to 10.
@thumper1 - You’ve got another 3.5 years (January 2020) until Microsoft stops supporting Windows 7 completely.
Here is the link to the Microsoft Windows lifecycle fact sheet:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle
And as @ClaremontMom posted in post #46 the deadline for the free Windows 10 upgrade is July 29th.
Oh good…because the only computer left with 7 on it is about 6 years old!
I was able to upgrade yesterday while I was working at home, the mysterious problem I had seemed to have gone away and the upgrade went through, maybe because of windows 8 updates that processed just before I did it). Other than having the start window, and them trying to push that stupid assistant program, I don’t notice anything. I was careful to turn off all the things Microsoft wanted to know about, like sending information on what I do so they can ‘tailor’ my experience (more like sell stuff to third party people). All my programs worked that I tried, and I otherwise don’t see much in the way of a difference yet.
^Did they learn nothing from Clippy?
^Clippy, lol - thanks for the reminder and the laugh @intparent ;))
