Do I HAVE to Update to Windows 10?

I’m happy now that I upgraded. Life is good.

H and I got ATT Windows phones for our pay by the minute plans- retired, rarely use them so save a ton of money. Nice that my computer data downloaded to my phone- saved typing in a lot! A clamshell for phone calls only would have worked just fine- I have a better camera.

I tried Win 10 back in December, went back to 7. Returned to 10 a couple of months later/ago. One difference is now the fall service pack is included without needing to wait a month. I personally dislike how desktops are being compatible with tiny cell phone screens- call it a program, not an app and spell out so many words instead of cutesy icons to learn- and get rid of the tiles! I never had to upgrade but those reminders kept coming.

I still like Explorer and my “favorites” (spelled just like that) list on the left. Edge is still a bit of a maturing to do. Chrome and Firefox are better per H and son (both much more into computers- son works in CS developing) but I like my lists. Son was no help- he went to the dark side (Apple) a while ago and I doubt he will bother to upgrades his Windows computers. Used both at work a couple of years ago.

H has a touchscreen- went from 8 to 10 and chooses touch or regular depending on his wishes. One thing he did for me was to advise me to keep the old control panel icon on my task bar- makes it easy to find some stuff. I kept my desktop icons, too. I skipped 8 and some earlier renditions of Windows since the Windows 95 days.

My computer is 5 years old now- glad I’m adjusting to the modern world (not with cell phone- don’t text, surf et al on it) before making the change. btw- they’re taking away Windows Live soon, sigh. Also- Picasa still works but Google wants to use its newer photo system. I dislike the use of the cloud instead of the hard drive trend. Unless you break into my house you have no access.

Oh- also H taught me the handy way to get rid of the annoying need for a password with 10. I have no need to lock my computer from my H- the only other person here. To disable/enable password you R click the start button, click run, netplwiz, enter.

Security is better in 7 than XP and I believe in 10. I do dislike that the companies- Microsoft and Google come to mind- want you to use their products exclusively. I prefer Google news as my homepage, haven’t quite figured out how to get it instead of Microsoft’s version (which is far too junky for me)whenever I go to home page (house roof icon). It would help if I spent some time on learning computer stuff instead of two finger typing on CC! I hate to type, btw.

Am reminded of the CC changes- some better too much lost/worse in my opinion.

The Bad News: Apparently, I jinxed myself by stating on this thread that I’ve had no issues with Win 10…My start menu and some apps (like my calculator) stopped working!

The Good News: A google search brought me to a solution that worked! (Keeping the fingers crossed it will continue to work!)

I downloaded Never10 - thanks for that tip. No more update nag screens AND got 4 gig of space back.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned here, but I was listening to talk radio and someone called in about this very topic. They didn’t want to upgrade. Another caller called in a few minutes later to say that, once you upgrade, you always have 30 days to go back to your previous version if you don’t like the new one. Then another guy called in and said the same thing. Some of them absolutely detested Win 9, so went back to Win 8 after road testing 9. They explained how they did it, but because I don’t use Windows, I didn’t pay attention. But evidently it can be done, but only within 30 days of the newest version.

Yes @terwitt, I posted a link back on #9 that describes how to do it…

Sorry… I didn’t read this thread when it started, and only heard the radio thingy recently, and didn’t want to have to go back and read through five pages. Glad there are instructions on how to do it so people don’t have to keep the upgrade if they don’t want to.

I upgraded. I’m fine with it. Nothing is really different.

There was a Windows 9? I thought it skipped from 8 to 10.

We skipped 8…it was awful.

No, there was never a 9 - it went XP,7, 8 and now 10. I was just at a friends house yesterday and she and her husband had been accidentally upgraded to 10. They called microsoft and were able to get it back to 7. I told her that 10 was not really that much different than 7, but I don’t think she believed me.

It is Microsoft’s own fault that people are not very trusting about the transparency of these upgrades. I have learned to brace myself for days of disruption and the need to purchase new peripheral hardware and/or software upgrades for packages I use each time I get a new operating system. But 10 was better than most – just a new scanner, no software upgrades needed. However, I dodged the upgrade for months to let the bugs get patched and software vendors to catch up.

My family used to have an HP that ran (I think) Vista, but it might have been XP. They got frustrated with it, so for about 5 years the house Conputer was a Mac. I got an HP laptop at the beginning of this school year. It runs 8. Apparently I’m in the extreme minority here, but I love 8. My sister got 10 on her identical laptop and I thought it was the ugliest thing I’d ever seen.

But what IS all the h8 for 8? To be fair, it does run somewhat slow, but I have very few problems otherwise.

Meh, it could just be that this is the only version of Windows I’ve used in years outside of school. (School-despite 5 different schools in the last 5 years!-has always run Windows 7 Professional, which I hate.)

Not a Windows person but a cousin just posted that she couldn’t stand 10 and went back to 7 at home (even though she has to use 10 at work).

I’m still on XP, but I can tell its days are numbered.

The hate for 8 is the $%& user interface. When you boot up, it uses those $%& tiles. You don’t see a desktop with icons on it. You have to hover on the right side for the charms for functions like settings, power, etc. It is goofy. I can’t find ANYTHING when I want to open an application, get into Explorer, etc. They broke the interface for laptops by trying to make it friendly to tablets. Ugh.

H had then went to 8.1- much better than the original 8. I have skipped several of the bad ones- had forgotten about Vista. H gets to test the latest and I then pick and choose. Windows 10 IS different than 7, but upgrading means you get to keep a lot from 7. Perhaps some are used to apps and the appearance of their smart phones so forget what life was like before all of the glitz.

Theories about Windows version number:

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/191279-why-is-it-called-windows-10-not-windows-9

This is interesting. For many Asian people, number 9 is the lucky number because it is the highest number in a card game (adding all the numbers from the drawn cards to get the total then mod (divide) by 10 to get the remainder. The highest number is 9). Many Asian stores and restaurants in California name their stores with number 9 in the names. And number 10 is definitely the bad number.

I think they skipped 9 to get as far away as possible from 8 as fast as they could…

^ 7 ate 9.
