Do I have too many reaches with my grades?

Hello!

I’m in senior year and studying in Hong Kong. I don’t hold American citizenship. My school uses the IB system and my subjects are
Higher Level: English, History and Business
Standard Level: Maths, Spanish and Chemistry

I’m getting a 34 overall (a 6 for Business and a 5 for everything else and 3 points for TOK/EE) and am starting to write my essays to my universities. My SAT score is 1870 (Reading 660, Writing 640, Maths 570)I have applied Early Decision to Emory (where I have legacy from my brother) and did a campus tour on a visit to the US about a month ago.

My other 7 universities are UNC, NYU, UMich, USC, Tufts, Boston U and Northeastern. This list is obviously flexible and this is where I’m looking for help. My IB score isn’t spectacular, but isn’t awful either. The same applies with my SAT Score although the score is generally lower than the 25% for most of the colleges. My extra curriculars are solid (Vice Captain for Soccer Team, Play the guitar and taught kids over summer in addition to 4 internships and other less meaningful stuff)

I was wondering what you guys thought of my chances for the universities? Tufts is the only school I think can be considered a target school, but this is still a stretch. I want to do business and the top 3 schools (UNC, NYU and UMich) I’ve applied to have good business programs in addition to good liberal arts programs. I’m worried that I’ve applied to too many schools that may be out of my reach and if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, you are in danger of not getting into any of these school. Not sure what you mean by target, but I’d call Tufts out of reach. BU and Northeastern are your best chances, but not guaranteed. Indiana comes to mind as a good business program you should get into.

Hi man ! I don’t want to comment but here’s one of my friend’s stats for NYU last year.
Like you, he’s an international student from china. I was in the same class as his when we studied in singapore

SAT 2000+ ( i dont know the breakdown but M =800)
SAT2 = all above 700 and Math = 800 also
A level predicted result = AAAAB
Rank = 2nd in my class (I’m the 1st :slight_smile: )

ECs = He’s my Prefect team leader
Vice president of several toastmaster club in singapore
Founded and became the president first school based toastmaster club
Hundreds of hours fo voluntary work
Organized a commemoration of a disaster. His project was reported by a large local newspaper.
Best speaker of our school-based debating championship.
A lot more

Awards : amazing stuff like Math and chem olympiads, etc etc

result : He got rejected !

I dont know the reason but until now it’s still an enigma for me. It could be caused by a lot of reasons = increase in the international students competition to gain access to US’s top colleges, his essays (but when I read that, I personally think it’s solid), etc

I dont wanna say whether it’s NYU’s a reach for you or not, but I’m sure my friends stats would be more than enoguh to illustrate the competition to get in.
Don’t hesitate to PM me and please chance me in my thread :
