Do I have what it takes to get into a good school for musical theatre. I am a current junior. I’ve acted in plays and musicals since freshmen year, mostly ensemble, my biggest role was in Bye Bye Birdie as Maude. I just made my schools show choir this year so by the time I graduated I’ll have 2 years of symphonic choir and 2 years of show choir experience. I don’t know if this helps but I have also been in the band for 6 years now.

@theatekidforever - it is impossible for us to answer your question. None of us have seen you perform, and even if we did, there is so much more that goes into acceptances. If you have been reading posts, you will see stories of kids who have been “stars” for years not getting into the programs they hope for. You will read “Cinderella” stories of the kids who discover and fall in love with theater after one or two shows and get into top schools. There is NO way to predict.

So here are some thoughts. What do you mean by “a good school”? There are SO many different definitions. Think about what you want- BA/BFA, big/small, Urban/Campus and start making a list of schools you are interested in. Research, investigate, and visit (when possible) But don’t let theater be your only benchmark on a school- remember, you’ll be there 4 years. D and I found it a good test to ask “would you like this school if you couldn’t do theater here?”. Try to come up with the often noted (on CC) “Balanced List”. And go back and read threads- there is a wealth of information here that may help you answer your own question! Best of Luck to you!!

@theatekidforever - ditto what toowonderful wrote. ANYTHING is possible - whether for good or bad. If YOU are willing to put in the effort - WAY beyond what your non-MT classmates will do - in preparation for the college application/audition process, you CAN make it happen. Obviously read the CC posts of those who have gone before you. Get some dance training if you can, ballet is great. Acting classes/lessons can be a huge plus. Find a local voice/acting teacher with knowledge of the MT world to evaluate your skills and get coaching if possible. Even if you don’t have the money/home support to get these things that “regular” folks might consider “extras”, you can still do it, but you will need an understanding teacher/counselor/neighbor/relative to help with some of the aspects of the application process at the very least. I’d say playing an instrument for 6 years is a true asset. The ability to read/play music is a big plus in this age of asking actors to “do it all”. Might also be helpful for getting you into a program that offers MT as BM (Bachelor of Music) like Baldwin Wallace and Oklahoma City. Both VERY tough programs to get into, but there are many others. If you are willing to work hard, you can do this.

One of the most frequently made comment made during my son’s auditions was about his band, jazz band experience, so definitely find a place to mention it regarding other talents I think it is an opportunity to again to show the dedication and discipline that is needed to succeed in the arts.
