I’m not a math guy, and would like to take another humanities instead, as I intend to major in International relations.
I took Geometry 9th grade, Algebra 2 in 10th grade, and Precalc in 11th grade. Looking to apply to more selective LAC’s- how big of a black mark will I get if I don’t take a math senior year?
“We give the greatest weight to your academic transcript. The rigor of the courses you’ve taken, the quality of your grades and the consistency with which you’ve worked over four years give us the clearest indication of how well you will do at Amherst. While there is no specific set of secondary school classes required for admission, the most competitive applicants have pursued the strongest program of study available at the secondary level—typically including four years of study in English, math, science, social studies and foreign language—and have achieved the highest levels of academic performance.”
Not taking math all 4 years would be a risk, although Stat’s might count. Other selective LAC’s are similar in what they look for. You can do your own research.
What were your grades in the math subjects 9-11th grade? What was your SAT/ACT math subscore? Did you take an SAT2 math test, and what was your score? If you made all A’s and had high scores (700+/32+), it might be you sufficiently demonstrated your proficiency in math and not taking Calc would not be a big deal.
@gman123, my son (HS senior) is in a similar situation, although he took all of the math classes you took one year earlier, and took AP Stats junior year.
He’s now in AP Calc, and really wants to withdraw because he is not a math guy, although he does well in math. We looked at the requirements for the various schools he is considering applying to (no Ivy/top tier other than UCLA and Cal) for humanities and they vary a lot. Many say they require 4 years of math, but, when asked, some say that means the applicant just has to have completed precalc. Others, however, specifically state that they require senior year math class. Others indicate that they look at math when considering the rigor of the senior year program.
In addition, he has already submitted his application to a couple of schools and indicated on the applications that he is enrolled in AP Calc. He is sticking with the class.
It really depends on what schools you are applying to. Drill down as best you can to get the most accurate information. Good luck!
Even if you have depleted all Math courses available at your HS, it is not recommended to leave senior schedule without Math. You are far from that reason and I don’t see why you want to drop the Math. You should to maintain the 4 cores throughout high school while English and Math are the core of the cores.
