New York / The East Coast really isn’t all that special. And while it is true that kids aren’t noticeably high all the time (at least at the good schools. there are a few reject schools that are full of them, but…) and all that, we have an insane amount of snobby kids. Sure, everyone’s fairly polite and we probably have better style than CA kids (haha) we have much higher levels of snobbery. I mean, then again, it depends where you live and all that, but we have a lot of fake-ness.

lol And NY is fun and all that, but it’s like I’m living in a bubble. Like, there’s my school and the kids who go to schools like mine, and then there’s the rest of New York. Maybe it’s better to be sheltered than not, but it’s not exactly exciting or fun. I mean, I definitely want to come back when I settle down and all that, but I want to leave for college and stuff, definitely.

I’ve never been to Newport, but if it’s anything like the Hamptons, (which I have been to) then it’s probably like… alright, I guess. I’ve discovered that summer is so much more fun when you travel or go to camp. Have you ever been to camp, Blairt? I heard that most kids outside of the city (ny) don’t really go, but I was just wondering. lol

yeah… i went to horseback riding camp in near Blair academy (hehe) in North NJ
bunch of kids from the city.
i went when i was younger… it was pretty fun.
yeah, i guess city kids go a lot… my mom said that when she went to camp when she was younger, EVRYONRE was one of those sheltered city kids… “i go to boarding school all year and then on the holiday breaks i go to cultural programs and enrichment classes and theonly time i see my parents is on parent’s day at boarding school and then i come here in the summer right before going back home in nyc for a week while my parents are out traveling to have my nanny babysit me…”…many kids were like that when i went, but im only just remembering how north NJ/manhattan dominated it was. its ridiculous.

when i said east coasters keep their kids more grounded, i def didnt mean nyc (no offense)… i meant like, families is MA and CT… im sure NYC is more insane than LA in terms of partying (well, whoever wins, its close). the hamptons bore me, personally… i dont think its like newport. newport is so much better… i love it<33333… more chill… its like the cape and your typical cali town rolled into one… with all the great clubs and schools… i think imight just end up going to st georges (that is, if i get in)… even if i am accepted to Andover/choate/exeter… its so chill.

lol I’m glad you don’t mean new york, but honestly, it’s not like california. It’s like a hybrid, sort of. If by CT, you mean greenwich, then you’ll find that the kids are very similar to new york kids. I’ve found the kids from MA to be kind of small-townish and a little more grounded/humble, but that’s because most of them are somewhat uncultured and naive. And they’re also more humble than NY/CA kids because they’re generally not as wealthy. And there’s nothing to do in MA. So they get high a lot more than new yorkers do (except for public school kids and private school rejects and all that). There are good things to every place, I guess.

Blair, if you said you love SGS and the ‘SGS crowd’, I’m sure you’ve visited the campus, and if you’ve told them you’re interested in boarding school, you PROBABLY gave them your address. Don’t even think for a moment that SGS adcoms will be on boardingschoolreview.com.

And it’s a bit “pretentious” to assume that they’d send you information about their school because they saw your ‘stats’ or SSAT scores, which, by the way, I thought you hadn’t gotten back yet.

Mercersburg is definitely more than a match for some of the other prep schools in the northeast, especially those in the Mid-Atlantic. Although it does not have the same level of prestige as places like Andover, Exeter, Choate, Hotchkiss, and Lawrenceville. As a Mercersburg graduate, I can say that the academics are definitely first rate, and are more than comparable to schools like Peddie, Hill, and Hun School of Princeton. In fact, according to boardingschoolreview.com, Mercersburg has the 3rd largest endowment among the MAPL schools (behind Peddie and Lawrenceville), and the 13th largest out of 214 schools listed on the site (6m behind St. Andrew’s, DE).
Mercersburg offers more AP courses than Lawrenceville, Peddie, Phillips Exeter, Hotchkiss, and Miss Porters, offering almost twice as many as Peddie. It also offers more sports than most other schools in the the MAPL league.

Mercersburg’s acceptance rate is currently 38%, which is in the middle range of upper-level boarding schools. I surmise that if the school were located near a major metro area (a major advantage Mercersburg doesn’t have), the acceptance rate would be at least 7-10% lower.

As for people looking in the Mid-Atlantic area, I would definitely put Mercersburg on your list to visit if you can. The PR department is working extra-hours to send out all those annoying brochures because the school just finished a 100+ million dollar Fine Arts center, which just received some very famous people at its opening, including Benicio Del Toro '85 and Itzhak Perelman. I wish I was around to see that.

Yeah, I’m in California right now. We had supper at nine. My dad likes to eat late, and he has a very liberal definition of “about a seven-thirty dinner”. :D

Very good, blairt.
Yes, my dad has a very relaxed philosophy about time. My sister and I can tell how much time to add to the time he says he’ll be done from something or back from somewhere (usually one half hour to four hours) from what he’s doing. He’ll tell me “Dinner at seven-thirty tonight.” I’ll say “What you making?” He’ll tell me, and I’ll say “So dinner at around eight-thirty, nine?” He’ll say “No, seven-thirty”. We’ll eat at eight forty five. :D

EVERYONE in my family is the same way. I just celebrated my birthday today (Dec. 28…15 days later)… even my grandparents. they’re all life-long procrastinators.

ok… SGS is a very competitive school. i know all schools are always looking for more diverse applicants and whatnot, but what are the chances that they would go out looking for students? because they send me an email in October, giving me info on the school (you know, “this is a great school. were diverse. we have a huge endowment. we have 7 tennis courts. rigorous academics”) though i didnt ask for it… you think theyre interesting in me? the info i posted was just like 3 sentences explaining how i would like a school with a challenging curriculum and possibly a strong arts program… you think they’re lookig for more artists?

That’s funny, because my dad is the only one. My mum and sister tend to be a little slow to leave the house, but nothing like him. His new wife is kind of like that, though.
I don’t know about the St. George’s thing. Are you considering applying there, or just wondering why they sent you information? If you’re just wondering why they sent you information, it’s probably because they had your address and knew you were applying to boarding school, and the more applicants they get the better. Other than that I can’t think of anything in particular.
