Do I need to be in honors math classes to get into a good undergrad dietetics program?

Hello!

I’m currently a sophomore in high school in a really competitive school district.
I’m taking all honors courses and 1 AP, ( the maximum allowed for a sophomore in my school), except for math.
In my school, to qualify for an honors course, there are really rigid requirements. I’ve never been good at math, so I didn’t meet the requirement to get into honors.
Instead, I’m in the Accelerated (middle) level.

My unweighted GPA for freshmen year is a 3.8, and my weighted GPA is a 5 (out of a 6)
I’m getting pretty good grades right now, (All A’s), so I expect my weighted GPA will be much better by the end of sophomore year.

These are my extracurriculars:

  • Publicity Head of Literary Magazine
  • Founder of Charity
  • Member of mentoring program (must qualify to get in)
  • Pianist for 8 years (played at carnegie hall/ I currently play piano as volunteering)
  • Guitarist for 5 years (I'm going to start playing this as a part of my volunteering)
  • C.I.T. (will be a counselor next year) at summer camp
  • Tutor

I’m really interested in becoming a registered dietitian, and I’m wondering if not being in honors math will ruin my chances.
I’m want to go to schools like Penn State, University of Miami, UT Austin, NYU, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Thanks!

In your really competitive high school District the counselors should be familiar with admissions to schools like these. Have you asked the counselor?

What math class are you taking this year and your plans for the next two? You seem like a solid candidate, depending on your Standardized testing and if you live in PA, you should get into Pitt and Penn State. I can’t speak on the others.

You do not have to be in honors math.

Math is a subject where it is critical that you build a solid foundation. If you need to take things slowly so that you truly understand the material, then take it slowly. In the long run you will be better off.

I am taking accelerated (the middle class) this year.
Next year, I will meet the grade requirement to move into honors. I don’t live in PA, I’ll be taking the Biology and US history SAT subject test this summer. I’ll be tasking the SAT in October. Hopefully I will score well in those exams!

I have set a meeting with my guidance counselor. Unfortunately, they are often overworked and can be unhelpful. However, our grading portal will open a page where we can see the percentage of students from our school accepted into certain universities.

At my D’s university (Ohio University) you are required to take college Algebra to continue in the Dietetics program. I don’t think you need to take Honors Math but you do need to take the courses necessary to get into college Algebra and test into the course upon entering college (most colleges require you take the ALEKS test to determine which level of math they will allow you into). The better prepared you are in HS the more likely math will be a one semester course for you in college. To prepare yourself to take college Algebra (the equivalent to Algebra 2) you should be proficient in Algebra 1 and Geometry. You may consider taking Algebra 2 if it fits in your schedule to give yourself an opportunity to become familiar with the material.
