Do i need to make up for W's that are not part pre-req of my major?

i’m a student in community college, and i want to transfer to a UC.
I have 2 W’s in Calc 1, my major is media studies/communications.
Calc 1 is not needed for my major.
Those 2 W’s are back-to back, first i took it in fall 2011, then winter 2012.
should I retake it or not? i don’t want to lower my gpa. my overall gpa is now 3.83 (major gpa: 4.00). i’m applying for UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCSB for fall 2013.

and do i need to explain about the W’s in my personal statement? if yes, how should I explained it?

please help me…

thanks.

Are those W’s pulling down your GPA? In most schools, W’s aren’t counted towards ones GPA. I don’t think its really necessary to address. If you want, you could say something such as “I learned a lot at my time at community colleges. In fact, it wasn’t long ago I selected courses that I didn’t even need in my major because I didn’t take full advantage of the student service support around me, such as advising. Now that I am fully aware of the resources it has proven me to to be a stronger student and when I transfer I will be sure to be aware of those resources going forward.”
