Do I stand a chance at Selective universities such as rice, vanderbilt, washu

I am a hispanic going into sociology. I have taken ten ap classes, but I did not perform the best on the AP tests. Out of ten, I passed nine and one three of those were 5s. I have six threes. I’ve had a two year internship at a local non profit, founded two clubs, a feminist group and a tennis team. I am president of the feminist group and team captain of the tennis team. I’ve been playing in orchestra since fourth grade, and I am now first chair viola. To build on the feminist group, I have a blog and am an ambassador for my region. I feel that my ECs demonstrate a strong interest in sociology, but these schools are crazy competitive. I do come from Texas, and many of my classmates have also applied ED. I have a 3.57 GPA and a 34 Act. I know I am not very strong academically, but Do I have a shot?

I don’t like playing the Chance Me game as there are so many unknowns. Your test score is great (within the range), but as you know, your grades are below the range by a long shot. So I have a question for you. Let’s say your ECs get their attention and you have some other hooks and you get the result you want, do you feel you will be a competitve enrolled student? So many want the prize of admission without thinking about the experience once admitted. I’m not judging, I’m just asking. Will you be able to keep up with a cohort of 4.0 / 5s on many AP exams and will you like that environment? Some are more collaborative than others but they all will require a lot of work. Some lower GPA kids (and higher ones actually) would love that challenge and others would be intimidated. Which one are you?

Your ACT is strong, but I’m not sure it’s going to overcome the GPA for those schools. Plus, even if you get in, you still have to pay for those schools. It doesn’t hurt to apply as a reach school or two. Be sure you have some strong target and safety schools that you’d be happy going to.

WashU might be the best bet of the 3 schools.

Sociology is an undersubscribed major at WashU. The school got rid of the major about 20 years ago, but brought it back recently.
