Do I stand a chance? TAMU Mays as a 2nd quarter kid [TX resident, top 47% rank, 3.34 GPA, 31 ACT]

Submitted my Texas A&M application over a week ago (Sept 30), and I am applying as an in-state Latino female to Mays to eventually major in Finance.

GPA: 3.34 UW, 3.88 W (grades went down freshman year when I moved to the US; explained it in my app; now they average at As & Bs)
Class rank: 396/860 (2nd quartile)
ACT: 31 (34R, 34E, 28M, 27S)
Course rigor: 12 APs (all scores of 3+), 1 DC, 6 honors, rest is regular

ECs:

  • Competitive dance for 13 years; performed internationally, raised money & earned merits on prestigious international exams
  • FBLA: placed in state comp + done volunteering
  • TSA: placed in state comp
  • Part-time job: ran the front desk, increased customers
  • I manage submissions for a digital literary magazine
  • Head of marketing for a student-run productivity platform
  • Helped Spanish-speaking grandparents learn English
  • Somewhat successful youtube channel & Instagram for digital art

Essays: ran them by ivy league students who said they were pretty ivy level (spent a lot of time on them lol)
LORs: asked my AP Eng Lang teacher & my Principles of Business, Mktg & Finance teacher for recs

I also submitted my AP scholar w/ distinction certificate and my National Hispanic Recognition certificate in AIS to give me an extra boost if any

I know my GPA and class rank really hurts me, but do I still stand a chance?
edit: formatting error

One always stands a chance but I would definitely have backups.

Most likely Mays won’t be an option.
What was your 2nd choice major?
Did you check you’d be willing to accept Blinn TEAM?
National Hispanic Recognition awards aren’t given out anymore at TAMU.
Is your school an identified Century Scholar school (counselor will know)?
Hopefully you have applied to other schools?

I think there’s a chance because you sound like an amazing well rounded student. While your grades starting out bring your gpa down, TAMU (like all schools) also look at trajectory. The fact that you addressed it in your essay is great and your experience is not common amongst most of the applicants.

While Mays could be full by the time you are admitted, I do believe you have a good chance of getting into TAMU. @52AG82 asked what your 2nd choice major is… curious to know that as well. Changing majors into Mays after completing 30 hours at tamu is doable but if that’s the path you are put on, you’ll need to work with advisor to make sure your degree plan puts you in a favorable position.

Please keep us posted and well done on being such a great applicant. I wish you the best.

Yeah, I’d be willing to accept Blinn! I put engineering as my 2nd choice

I put engineering as my second choice

Eek that’s going to be a hard one. I’m glad you’re open to Blinn Team. That could set you up well for success.

Literally every single person from my kid’s high school who applied to TAMU got in last year, if you include Blinn Team. More than 70 students total out of 220. That may not happen at every school (and most years we “only” have about a 80-90 percent acceptance rate). But if you are willing to accept Blinn Team I think your chances are good.

Wow that’s crazy. Never heard of such a high acceptance rate at one school. @friscodad has better stats on things like this.

I agree 100 percent is crazy. I mean I guess there could be a problem with Navismce data. But it shows that every applicant was admitted and I know several who were blinn.

The overall in state acceptance rate for TAMU is 65 percent so it’s not crazy that some schools would have 80 percent accepted (as we normally do).
