Do I stand a chance?

Male from Texas. I intend on doing pre-med.

I am an IB Diploma Candidate

Here’s the deal with my gpa: I feel that it is lower than average because my school includes 8th grade HS courses in their gpa calculations. I don’t know if Emory itself has the policy of looking over these grades, so the GPA that Emory calculates may be different than what my high school calculates.

GPA UW: 3.65 if you count 8th grade Alg I and IPC courses. 3.8-3.9 if you don’t.
GPA W: 4.2 if you count 8th grade Alg I and IPC courses. 4.4-4.5 if you don’t.

Rank: Not sure. May or may not be in the top 10%. Definitely in top 15%.

SAT: I haven’t taken it yet, but based on practice exams, I project a 2100 should be an achievable goal for me.

IB Tests: I am confident that I will earn at least a 5 on each of them.

I’m doing SL and HL Biology and Chemistry both at the same time; I’m doing Chinese IB; Math Standard Level; World Religions IB; History of the Americas Higher Level, and a few others.

Extra curriculars:

Theatre & Acting in my school’s production company. I’ve put many hours in, and I’ve had some major roles through the years.

Young Republicans - Officer
many hours into this

National Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta - officer

Latin Club - Founder
Writing Club - Founder (we did a little newsletter sort of thing which we grew out)
Key Club

I have others, but these are the main ones that I’ve poured the hours into.

Do I stand a chance, or does my gpa really, really hurt me?

Emory academic profile of admitted students 2010:
Academics - Admitted Students
Average GPA, middle 50% 3.74 - 3.99 / 4.0 unweighted scale
SAT verbal, middle 50% 640–740
SAT math, middle 50% 650–760
SAT writing, middle: 650-750
SAT total, middle 50% 1950–2250
ACT, middle 50% 30–33

I’ve never heard that any colleges include your 8th grade courses in your GPA. Thus, it sounds like your HS GPA and your projected SATs would place you within Emory’s academic profile. Keep in mind that a lot of students have similarly solid stats so you still need strong essays, recommendations, extracurriculars, demonstrated interest and other factors. Don’t overlook demonstrated interest.
