I’m currently a sophomore in high school that’s looking to go to Pomona College. So far, for the first semester, I have a 3.83 unweighted GPA. I know that Pomona is a very selective college and I was wondering if I still have a chance to go there. :/

You have ABSOLUTELY NO chance of getting in…

if you don’t you apply (lol). If you bring that GPA up to a 3.9 by senior year, you have a good chance, but remember that Pomona doesn’t just look at your GPA.

Is the 3.9 an average of the sophomore/junior/senior semester GPAs?

Without knowing where you go to school, your GPA tells us nothing. At some schools, a 3.83 GPA would make you valedictorian; at others, you might barely be in the top half of the class. Even so, having one B in your first semester of sophomore year is not going to disqualify you anywhere. Not even Harvard.

So just stop wasting energy worrying about it. Instead, focus on your schoolwork, or playing a sport, or your friends, or spending time with your family. If you stay focused and continue to work hard, you will get into a great college, be it Pomona or Harvard or somewhere else.

Your GPA isn’t extremely low - I got in with a little bit lower unweighted GPA.
I agree with the previous post, as long as you have good consistent extracurriculars, high SAT/ACT scores and focus on your essays, you’ll have a good chance of getting in. Never assume that you won’t get in because of one thing on your application. Sure, GPA is very important but Pomona is a school that really emphasizes fit.

Good luck!

Plus you’re only a sophomore. You can definitely get your GPA higher by application time!

3.9 isn’t necessarily the target. Does your school rank? Your class rank and difficulty of course load are much larger factors than GPA.

really? you’re stressing over that fact?
you definitely have a chance. even people lower than 3.5 still get into pomona, as long as they have a story to tell. just do well with extracurrics, and portray yourself very well, then you’ll get in (:

thank you for all the replys !
