Do I still have a chance?

I’m a 22 year old minority (black) and want to pursue a degree in computer science. The issue is back when I was 20 I was arrested for a misdemeanor and ended up doing a pti diversion program and got it expunged. I didn’t want to share this with anyone, but Despite the fact that I have an expunged misdemeanor record can I still become a software engineer or am I screwed for life?

I am pretty sure doing pti and expunging it take it off your record and you don’t have to disclose it to anymore. Technically, you weren’t convicted of anything (pti is not a conviction) so you don’t put it on apps. Google yourself and see if it comes up - that would be the only problem, I think.

Of course you still have a chance! Please don’t let a mistake, made at a young age, keep you from pursuing your goals and dreams. Since it was expunged, doesn’t that mean that future employers couldn’t see that on your record? Even if they could, I think many people understand that mistakes are made. If you had a lengthy record, or didn’t demonstrate personal development and improvement since then, that might be different.

I also think it’s important to mention that employers could be eligible for tax credits by hiring certain demographics who face barriers to employment. For example, I believe credits are available if they hire individuals with a disability, or veterans, or ex-felons. This doesn’t really apply to you, since yours was a misdemeanor and is expunged anyway, but perhaps it’s helpful to someone else. It’s called the Work Opportunity Tax Credit:

Please be sure to research what being expunged means. My understanding is that it means erased, as in do not disclose it any more, anywhere. Be sure you understand the legal meaning. This probably means it is like it never happened. That means saying no to questions about a criminal record et al. But- double check with the legal system. If they say it must be mentioned you are obligated to do so. But, society feels you are just as good as the people who never did the wrong and is giving you a second chance.

Congratulations on turning your life around. Of course you have every option available to you. Good luck.
