Do IB grads get free tuition?

<p>Please tell me if my friend is right or wrong…
I have a friend that attends the IB program in Florida. He continually tells me that IB graduates (recipients of the IB diploma) get free tuition anywhere in the U.S. Many students from his school last year went to Harvard, Stanford, etc. and he claims this is because of this special award.
I was wondering if this is true… it seems a little strange to me that you would automatically get to go anywhere for free for getting an IB diploma.</p>

<p>Is my friend right or wrong?</p>

<p>He’s wrong.</p>

<p>lmao… thot so… anyone else?</p>

<p>Hope your friend does not actually believe this - he will be in for a heck of a shock when he applies for college.</p>

<p>some colleges have scholarships for IB Diploma students, e.g Univ of Rochester:</p>

<p>[University</a> of Rochester : Merit-based Awards](<a href=“http://enrollment.rochester.edu/financial/undergrads/merit.shtm#s5]University”>http://enrollment.rochester.edu/financial/undergrads/merit.shtm#s5)</p>

<p>An IB Diploma will also be helpful for admissions and credits.</p>

<p>All you need to do is look at colleges’ financial aid web pages to see that your friend is wrong.</p>

<p>But even U of R’s merit-based award for IB diplomas is only $5-10,000. While that can make a good sized dent, it’s not anywhere near a free ride - tuition and fees at Rochester amount to over $35,000.</p>

<p>Perhaps your friend is confusing the fact that IB Diploma holders get free tuition at public colleges in Florida through the state’s Bright Futures program(although its hard to imagine how he got to Harvard and Stanford from UF and FSU). There are much easier ways to get a Bright Futures Scholarship than by completing an IB diploma, though, as anyone with a 3.5 weighted GPA and a 1270 SAT/28 ACT also gets it. Those who fail to get the IB diploma but complete the IB curriculum need only the test scores to qualify, so it isn’t usually the diploma that is getting them the scholarship anyway. Most have sealed up the Bright Futures scholarship long before they find out in July whether they got the IB Diploma or not.
If you go to a private college in Florida, Bright Futures pays an equivalent dollar amount. I guess that’s why the IBO scholarship site now lists every college in Florida.

Although what your friend has told you is definelty not true, there is significant evidence that IB stduents get accepted more in Florida universities according to an 2011 IBO research survey.

The results are below in the following format:

University or college/ IB candidates/ AR Total population AR / IB candidates versus total population(parentage points):

*University of Florida / 82% /42% / +40%

*Florida State University / 92% / 60% /+32%

*University of Central Florida / 90%/ 47% /+43%

These are the rates for the top colleges mentioned in your post:

*Stanford University /15% / 7% / +8%

*Harvard University /10%/ 7% / +3%

Hope this provides insight.

AR= Acceptance Rate

Bless his heart.

Haha… I wish.
