I’m taking the SAT on saturday for the third time, and I need to get a 9 on my essay. Both times I’ve taken it I’ve gotten 80MC and a 6(lol) on the essay. Someone showed me the testmasters formula so I’m using that…and I made a lot of stuff up but I heard that was okay.

Topic: “Should society be criticized for being materialistic?”

The question"Should society be criticized for being materialistic?" suggest that the acquisition of possessions and the constant spending of money are faults that society can be criticized for. In my opinion society’s shift towards materialism has caused much strife and a critique of this system is well over due. Throughout society and in life, the evidence to support my viewpoint is pervasive.
Consider the case of Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In the beginning of the novel Jay Gatsby falls madly in love with a young real-estate heiress Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby understands that the only way their relationship will work is if he also becomes rich. In his quest for wealth, Gatsby loses sight of his morals and does many less than admirable things. Eventually, Gatsby’s lust for money prepossess his mind and he forgets what he was obtaining the money for in the first place. Materialism’s influence on society deemed Gatsby unfit to marry Daisy, and spurred his desire to raise his social standing, which would eventually lead to his untimely death.
Another example is the Chinese war of the 1960s. For many years the powerful countries of the western hemisphere had traded peacefully with china, but when china, fearing that it’s culture was being decimated by the foreigners entering the country through it’s ports, placed restrictions on trade and imposed tarrifs the societies of the west continued demanding chinese silks and spices, inessentials. Fearing revolution, the governments of the western countries allied and invaded china, assassinating prominent government figures and installing puppet governments. As the country was inundated with traders a large portion of it’s culture was destroyed or blended with that of the invading immigrants. In this case materialism was enough to warrant the violation of a countries sovereignty and the destruction of it’s culture.
Clearly, the above examples show that materialistic society is corruption the masses and promoting barbaric acts in order to obtain mere wants. If society doesn’t make a conscious effort to redefine what is important it may commit more depravities like the invasion of a sovereign country or end up like Fitzgerald’s Jay Gatsby, worshiping at the alter of avarice.

I hope it doesn’t matter that my essay is pretty much in no way factually accurate. Any critiques or advice would be greatly appreciated.
