At my school I have about a 3.9 gpa (Mechanical Engineering major) and lots of great extracurriculars including an internship at NASA for mechanical engineering and possibly now that I’m interested in software engineering a software internship at another big name company. Since I’m a mechanical engineering student would I have any chance to transfer into a top school for computer science or will my application just get thrown away once they see mechanical engineering? I have 56 college credits (3 semesters) and have taken one intro to engineering programming class, and if I did this I would have great reasons for my essay as to why I want to switch from mechanical to computer science and certain programs and labs that the college has that my college doesn’t that lines up with my career goals. I’m most interested in are GaTech, UIUC, U Washington, U Wisconsin and U Mich.
You need to check each target school to see what prerequisite courses they expect you to take if you want to transfer as a CS major.
I totally agree with @ucbalumnus on the prereq. courses, go check ASAP.
Have you thought of other great CS programs? From what I see, you have great stats, and solid extracurricular activities under your belt. Cornell is great. UT Austin as well.
Maybe it sounds crazy, but what about MIT? Wouldn’t hurt to shoot out an app, see where it gets you.
