Do MUSIC/ATHLETIC awards count as "SCHOLASTIC DISTINCTIONS"?

For the CommonApp section titled “ACADEMIC HONOURS” (Briefly list or describe any scholastic distinctions or honors you have won since the ninth grade), would music and/or athletic awards count?

Well, probably not athletic awards, but music…

Depends. If you took a music course and received an award as best music student at the end of your junior year, I’d say yes. If you’re in the band and the band gave out awards I’d say no, it would go under extra curricular accomplishments. Definite “no” on athletic awards. Well, there might even be an exception there if you were named best “student-athlete.”

Generally no. Band and Orchestra and Athletic accomplishments are usually covered in another area of the application, and if not specifically, then in the final question: Tell us anything else about yourself.

At many schools, band is a regular course and is not an extracurricular. I would say that if the award is given for your performance in school in any subject you take as a class, it’s a “scholastic” award.
