I’ve been an amateur boxer for almost 6 years, and I am also a Golden Gloves champion. I was in cross country in the fall (we got 3rd in our district), and I am now a captain on my track team and I run long distance track. I am in the top %14 of mm class, my class size is something like 600-700. My GPA is 3.7-8 I believe. I am also on a leadership team in my church, and I have gone on many misison trips. Finally, my SAT is 1310 (M/590, V/720), and I just retook it to get my math higher.

You certainly sound like you would be competitive for an appointment, Shines. Getting your SAT’s up a bit probably wouldn’t hurt. If you can make it to a Summer Seminar, that would be a good thing. You could also take some AP classes or dual-credit classes to beef up your transcript more. There are no guarantees, as I’m sure you know. You could have a 1600 SAT, a 4.0, and pass the PAE, and you could still not get in. It sounds like you should be a great applicant, though!

Awesome! BTW, I’m taking AP Calculus 2 right now, and AP Government. Most of my classes have been AP, so I think I’m pretty good in that department. I haven’t taken any college classes though.

I concur with timely’s assessment. The AP stuff helps a lot and the athletic participation is good. I assume you will do well on the PAE. Only real concern is the SAT–1400+ and I’d say you’re probably a 90%er.

Well then, I better pray that I get a good score on the SAT. I think I did a LOT better on the math this time, but I don’t think I really got my verbal much higher, though there was only one word I didn’t know on it: chicanery. It means trickery. I think I guessed it right though.

As the others have already mentioned, your info looks good, but there’s not necessarily a direct correlation between those things and whether or not you’d get accepted. I base that on my observations of seeing some of the people USAFA has turned away (& their stats) and some of the people I see here who did not have superior stats.

Regarding the SAT, I forget what I got my first time, but my verbal score was too low. After taking it again, I ended up with a 630 and that was sufficient. For the total, I got a 1310 as well, and I’m here. Due to the pseudo-randomness I mentioned above, I cannot say for sure, however, as long as you are at least meeting the minimum requirements in everything (and obviously excelling in several), you should be okay. This is unless there is someone with the exact same qualifications besides a higher SAT score; in other words, a few points on it most likely will not make or break you, once everything else is taken into consideration.

I’ve said this on other fora: there’s no official presidential rotation as a speaker at SA graduations. Don’t count on it, don’t worry about it, don’t presuppose it. At the most, it’s an irregular tradition that’s no more than about 15 years old…

Get your math score up. If you didn’t make it this round of the SAT, keep taking it. It doesn’t matter how good you are in other areas, but you need to make all the minimums. That’s kind of how the game goes… I definitely wasn’t the strongest applicant in the world, but I made every single minimum. Missing a minimum and excelling in other areas probably won’t save you, since they’re looking for a reason to eliminate you off their list. You can get that score up, just take an SAT class or do a lot of practice in a Barron’s prep book. My math score started at 710 and held solid every single time I took the SAT, I just had to pull up my verbal over the course of 3 SATs.

It’s doable, so don’t worry. It’s not like you can’t do a single push up or something. You’re really qualified in other places, so once you get that math down, I’d say you’ve got better chances than I had of getting in, and I got my appointment.
