Do not let anything discourage you from applying to Stanford!

If he has no money to buy a good dictionary , how could he afford to buy English books, I spent thousand to buy books for my kids, because the books are too costly. It is hard to believe a person counts for every dollars would fly to other country to have a sat test, Instead of going to hk is much cheaper. The whole story is lie…

This is both funny and sad. Funny because I never knew there were so many potential lawyers on CC. If I were ever in court I would have one of you guys defend me.

i believe his major achievement lies in creative writing…
fantastic story just don’t publish your book in Beijing. you’ll get tons of readers by stating this on its cover:
BANNED
in China
OR
Beijing Writer
in Exile
you know Americans buy that.
I strongly believe you are Chinese though. the rest, nayyy… perhaps you are a descendant of mao?

Ohlord.Whatever happened to innocence before proven guilty. Yall can’t prove anything and the OP is giving some people the push they need to apply to a reach school. :</p>

^ What happens to obviously guilty until proven innocent without reasonable doubt?

1- I think that one of the best aspects of CollegeConfidential.com is the mutual trust among the members. That makes this online community a place where people can benefit and also learn a great deal from each other.

Yet, there are some people who never have belief in others, who tries their best to find every and any evidence to prove that others are ■■■■■■, and also who will benefit the least from this community. In my case, let me state this: I do not live my life on this website; neither do I make money from it. I do not force you to believe me; neither do I force you to apply to Stanford. I just created this thread for people who trust what I write, not for you – who do not. Is that clear enough?

2- Before judging and/or requesting one to do something, you guys need to ask yourself if you have the rights and/or authority to do so.
Why do I have to give you my name? And/Or the information about my high school?
Why do I have to answer all of your unreasonable questions?
How can you judge me? Do you know me personally? Have you read my application?

I too think that you are amazing… truly an inspiration in this crazy college process!

ohh weell then.
sorry if i came off as rude…
best of luck at stanford

congrats  you definitely deserve it

Stanford may have an ulterior motive in admitting students mediocre (I am not referring to the OP specifically). It may be a ploy to lower acceptance rates.

Some colleges mail informational packets to students who have no chance of acceptance. When these students apply, they are immediately rejected. Universities do this to artificially depress their acceptance rate.

It’s possible that some universities are taking this one step further. Let’s suppose that each year, Stanford accepts 20 applicants who appear to be without distinction. If these 20 tell others about how they were accepted with mediocre achievements, it could potentially encourage other mediocre students to apply. Most will be rejected, acceptance rates fall, and Stanford gains even greater prestige for being “exclusive”.

This is all speculation, and I certainly don’t mean to sully the OP’s acceptance. It’s just some food for thought.

kal ■■■■■■ may have an ulterior motive in concocting completely unfounded conspiracy theories (I am not referring to cavilier specifically). It may be a ploy to lower Stanford’s 95% cross-admit win rate against UC Berkeley.

Some colleges mail informational packets to students who have no chance of acceptance. When these students apply, they are immediately rejected. Universities do this to artificially depress their acceptance rate.

It’s possible that some universities are taking this one step further. Let’s suppose that each year, Stanford accepts 20 applicants who appear to be without hair. If these 20 tell others about how they were accepted with baldness, it could potentially encourage other bald students to apply. Most will be rejected, acceptance rates fall, and Stanford gains even greater prestige for being “exclusive”.

This is all speculation, and I certainly don’t mean to sully the kal ■■■■■’s epic fail. It’s just some food for thought.

Assuming that what the OP has presented is true, would it have been more believable had she lied and listed a 2400 SAT, several international awards, and affiliations with powerful authorities in her country…? -_- How can you tell if something is true or false based on your perception of validity, especially when this information is being presented online? Why am I even typing this? For fun, I guess ^^ And it’s an interesting topic. I’d congratulate you pleasewharton, but I really don’t know what you’re like. However, from the impression that I had gotten from reading your writing, and if this is true, you don’t seem like the kind of person who would care about others’ impressions of you anyway. If you really got in, ^^, all the power to you. Keep striving to better this society that we live in. All of us only have one life to live, and a chance of a lifetime to make a difference in this world. Jiayo!

@iamtbh-Whoa, calm down there. I wasn’t trying to insult Stanford, and I didn’t mean to get anyone riled up. If it was construed as an insult, then I apologize for communicating poorly. As I said before, it’s all speculation. I never made any claim to truth, so it is redundant to use phrases like “conspiracy theories” and “unfounded.”

Even so, you can’t deny there is a lot of puffery about selectivity in college admissions, and [universities love using numbers to trump up their prestige.](<a href=“http://chronicle.com/blogPost/The-Most-Selective-Admissi/22227/"]universities”>http://chronicle.com/blogPost/The-Most-Selective-Admissi/22227/)

I am extremely skeptical. I’m sure some extraordinary cases are admitted despite unimpressive stats, but your writing ability is not at all commensurate with your standardized test scores. I don’t think anyone with your purported background would be 100% comfortable with English idioms and forum jargon—this entire Cinderella story smacks of an enterprising American high school student having some fun with gullible CC members.

Congratulations Pleasewharton!!! I believe you for the simple reason that sometimes people undergo special circumstances and show them so well in their apps that they DO get accepted.
To all of you out there-it might be hard to believe what the OP said is true, but then we’re all used to stellar stats here on cc.However, the OP had almost no money and didnt know english till a year ago.The admission officers obv must have considered that.I personally find it very courageous on the OP’s part to go through the gruelling process on her own.

If the OP is lying, then he/she is extremely good at marketing themselves online. To construct those paragraphs at the start of this thread takes a lot of intelligence and skill, even if one necessarily does not speak English primarily. Even if the whole thing is fake, I genuinely liked the OP sentimentally. Normally, I abhor sentimentality. This story nearly brought me to it. But, yes, the entire thing seems a little fishy, although the OP could simply be a bad test-taker and yet a good writer.

I think some of the resistance to the OP comes from CC’s overall refusal to believe in other factors affecting admissions that exclude scores or EC’s. Ultimately, it’s a bit of a personality contest, especially in the essays.

If the OP is not lying, all the power to him/her, best of luck at Stanford because he/she deserves it.

Sometimes, I think part of the reason why a post like pleasewharton’s holds such appeal is that CollegeConfidential has a lot of pretentious liars. I’m not sure what kind of thrill anyone gets from stating they have a 23xx on a SAT or are the president of 5… yes, five EC clubs at their college. (I don’t believe any respectable student union would allow such a thing)

At the end of the day, admissions officers are real people. I’m pretty sure they get sick of seeing unrealistically pretentious applicants and someone like the OP is a breath of fresh air - especially a foreign student that writes really well (haha that’s pretty rare).

This petulant ■■■■■ who goes by the ridiculous appellation “pleasewharton” impregnates our beloved Stanford forum division with ignominy, vilification, and odiousness. Not only has she attempted and succeeded to deceive thousands of our compassionate CCers to congratulate her, but she has also fooled hundreds into grasping the spurious phantom of false hope.

While we must indubitably exalt “pleasewharton” of her meritorious “creative writing” idiosyncrasies, we must also abhor her for it. Such an undertaking, such a fatuous and repulsive lie brought to the Imperial Forums of Stanford, is absolutely unheard of.

To be completely honest from the bowels of our heart, if it were not for her being Chinese, we would have urinated on her at once.

@wwlink…if you think that being president of 5 clubs is bad, you should meet the people who actually attend. It’s actually much worse.

OMG, this is soooooooo great!
