Do not let anything discourage you from applying to Stanford!

Guys, I’m a chinese and let me tell you, there is no way a student with a 90 toefl score could ever get into harvard. Maybe you guys don’t know, but it’s actually a lot more competitive for international student to get into the Ivies and stanford than you domestic students.

i am a Chinese and i doube that, unless you got international gold medals. i just dont believe you. you must be kidding.

what a big ** troooooooooooooll**

the admission officers won’t look at your applications if you haven’t met their minimum requirements. .though they claim that they will read every app.the minimum TOEFL score for Harvard is 100. There is no way to have the officers read your applications if you don’t meet the requirements. (one or two points less is permissible, but 10 points less is definitely unbearable)

this is getting ridiculous. I am an international student and I am confident to use the word “ridiculous” to describe this case.
Now I wonder why some of you guys can believe this. the international pool is absolutely and undoubtedly very competitive. you domestic students can check out international students profiles from each top10 school’s website if you don’t believe me.

even IMO or iPHO gold medals cannot guarantee one’s admission to Harvard or Stanford. I’ve heart lots of gold medalists rejected by these prestigious schools, and the sole reason is that they’ve got so many of such applicants. Take MIT as an example. This year MIT rejected half International Olympiad medalists. and Harvard is definitely more difficult to get into than MIT.

■■■■■■■■!!!i PMed him asking for specifics including which high school he goes to in Beijing and he never replied back!

PS I’m from China

Yeah, we Chinese applicants really doubt what she said. Many Chinese applicants know there is one or two liars who always say that he or she got in H or Williams or other top schools for years.

Ashamed for those liars…

Absolutely a lie because there’s no financial aid for foreign students

dawncoming, may I ask where you got this info:

“I’ve heart lots of gold medalists rejected by these prestigious schools”

“This year MIT rejected half International Olympiad medalists.”

&& to be to quite frank, why do you guys care so much if she is a ■■■■■?
really, what difference does it make to YOU?

Idk if pleasewharton is really lying or not, but she sounds really sincere so I believe her…
This thread kinda gave me a little hope, but it’d really suck if it was fake, but whatever.

oh & just wondering, are there really a lot of applicants from China?
like really COMPETITIVE applicants?

I told a friend of mine about this & his exact response was “********. They probably only accepted him/her to fill in quotas & probably because he was an international applicant.”

^my friend tends to think pretty negatively, so Idk.

someone fill me in? preferably pleasewharton (the OP)

I’m sorry if I sound harsh… but for some odd reason, I really believe that you got into Harvard, Brown, & Stanford… So I wish you nothing but luck!

to pleasewharton,

is it possible for you to share your high school name with us?

jbubbles123,
which institution is your friend accepted to? I don’t believe the reason accepting your friend is only that he was an international applicant.
Top schools always have much lower acceptance rates for International students than for domestic students.

It’s extremely competitive for international students who request financial aid. (except only five or six institutions, such as Harvard, Amherst, whose policy is need-blind for international applicants)

it is interesting to see many cuusers here lol

Give it a break. He’s obviously ■■■■■■■■, just let this thread die.

yes it matters. I hate people giving false hope. and whatnever kind of lie IS lie after all. You have to have amazing academics to get into a top school. I checked your profile history, and if I am not wrong I think you are Indian American? ask any of you friends who hold an Indian passport. You’ll understand how competitive the international students pool can be.
filling quotas? that’s absolutely impossible I assure you. it seems you think international students are admitted to top schools by sheer luck. I’ve posted here before that you can check out international students profiles from each school’s website. See how many applicants are there and how many slots have been given to int’ls. As an international student it is much harder to get into a top school like Stanford than domestic students. Not easier, you should keep that in mind.

for the first quote. I myself have a bunch of friends from Singapore, HK, and mainland China who have Olympiad medals or ISEF awards was rejected straight away by MIT, Stanford and Harvard. so That’s why I say “I’ve heard.”

for the second quote. I got that information from MIT forum on Pi day. Don’t remember which thread particularly, but I think I can find it for you, if you are so keen on the source.

yes. Lots of them. and We have record applicants this year. ample examples can be found at CollegeConfidential. Check out “Official Decisions” thread from each forum, if you are interested.

Don’t believe anything if you haven’t got enough information on your hands.

Hi everyone,

I think I do need to say anything about myself. The only thing I want to do is to correct a previous poster’s information about Harvard and Stanford’s TOEFL minimum requirements–just to make sure that future applicants will not get the wrong information.

HARVARD AND STANFORD DO NOT REQUIRE THE SUBMISSION OF TOEFL; IT IS JUST OPTIONAL. THUS, THERE IS NO MINIMUM TOEFL SCORE. PLEASE REFER TO THEIR WEBSITES FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

dawncoming-
yeah, i hate when people give false hope too, but i don’t understand why there are ■■■■■■?
what will the ■■■■■ get out of posting those fake stats? everyone’s practically anonymous here & there’s not really a way to track down people (well, don’t take this too literally)…
so i don’t understand why the OP would be ■■■■■■■■.

Yes, I’m Indian American… I actually hold an Indian and American passport though…
I totally believe international applicants do have a harder time when it comes to college admissions…
I really didn’t say that comment about filling quotas… my friend did because he found it nearly “impossible” for a person to be accepted into Harvard, Brown, and Stanford with a 1750.

It’s just that the OP sounds sooooooooooooo sincere… & it’s really hard to believe that she would make all this up.

I find it hard to believe that gold medalists get rejected away by most of these top schools… maybe everything else in their app wasn’t too strong? & they appeared as if they just relied on their gold medal for admissions.

I REALLY DON’T KNOW… i’m just hypothetically saying.

for the second quote, I would like to see the thread… and btw, you shouldn’t rely on what people say on threads as legit sources haha…

This person once said on a thread that if you have 2 of at least these 5 things (4.0, 1600 (well back then), USAMO, RSI, or ISEF), that you are guarenteed admission at MIT.

Yeah…

winterspring-

haha i’m sorry, i think you misread what i wrote. my friend is a junior and i told him about this thread and the OP, and he said that they just took the OP to fill in quotas.
The OP apparently got into Harvard, Stanford, and Brown. (sorry to the OP, i know this sounds a little harsh)

Pleasewharton-

not to be rude or anything, but why don’t you answer any of mine or anyone else’s questions?

王晨醒,高大成 ***

lol it seems that i can type in chinese here.

to pleasewharton,
“I think I do need to say anything about myself.” (i guess you wanna say “don’t” instead of “do”)

dont just lie about yourself ok?
can you PLEASE share your high school name so that i can verify the authenticity of your admission in a short period of time.

Oh dear!!! I couldn’t believe this story…One man is an international, Asian student living in Beijing, China…has an SAT score of 1750 and 90 in TOEFL (a poor score)…asks for a lot of financial aid (how hard it is for US colleges to provide foreign students for financial aid!!!)…has few impressing achievements/awards/extracurricular activities…has no “special” background—parents are not powerful governors/rich entrepeneurers/famous scientists…and most importantly, writes some perhaps-not-so-impressive app essays— how he/she struggled in school & came over the obstacles, and a class discussion, and annoying habit of waking up early, and how Stanford will help him/her become a successful entrepreneur—all of which are … %#$%^& topics……
AND NOW THIS MAN GOT INTO STANFORD, HARVARD AND BROWN.

perhaps #57 TONYSUN was correct.
