Do only nerds major in Computer Science?

Do only nerds major in computer science? Are girls turned off when they find out a guy they are talking to is majoring in CS?

I am just wondering because I dont really hang out with the nerd crowd at high school, and i play alot of sports and I dont seem like a computer guy…

Pretty much. Just like how only Nazi-sympathizers major in germanics, only terrorists major in chemistry, and only fratboys major in communications.

No, you dont have to be nerdy to major in computer science.
but there are a lot of nerdy people who major in computer science.

and since you have an ego, when you are around those more nerdy people, you wont be able to connect with them that well, so its up to you

Computer science is a major turn on, actually.

“Do only nerds major in computer science?”

 • No… not any more than, say, only nerds go to college*. The real cool people go do something exciting with their life. lol.

“Are girls turned off when they find out a guy they are talking to is majoring in CS?”

 • Whenever a girl talks to you, she’s turned off. If she pretends like she’s not, she wants a free dinner or a movie. Not the generic “you”, mind you.

"I am just wondering because I dont really hang out with the nerd crowd at high school, and i play alot of sports and I dont seem like a computer guy… "

 • Well, it sounds like you’re well on your way to a successful career. All you need to find is a job where your ability to play sports will be worth more to your employers than computer skills. I can name a laundry list off the top of my head: pro NFL, NBA, …, infantry, boxer, wrestler, …, porn star, street cop, fireman, …, the list goes on.

You’re really lucky, you know… most people don’t know what they want before college. Depending on where you go, you might be able to pick up a minor in “cool”.

Well, nerds and people who are wasting their and everybody else’s time.

Well in the couple of computer science classes I’ve had, there were definitely a lot of nerds. But you don’t have to be a nerd to major in C.S. There will probably be plenty of people in the program that aren’t nerds.

CS is probably one of the nerdiest majors on campus, if not the nerdiest. That point is p. much indisputable. This doesn’t mean that you have to be a nerd to be in or do well in CS. But you’ll probably have to spend a lot of time on your schoolwork.

haha sure

‘and since you have an ego, when you are around those more nerdy people, you wont be able to connect with them that well, so its up to you’

and since he said hes not good with computers, his only chance of survival in a CS major will be to ask those ‘nerds’ for help. but since he considers himself superior to them, they won’t like him, so they won’t help him. of course, the prof will be wayyy to nerdy for him to even want to look at, so he won’t ask the prof for help as well. thus, he will fail in the CS major

i suggest he major in something easier, like communications. that way, he’ll meet like-minded peers who despise ‘nerds’

Well I was going to answer with some funny and witty remark, but it seems most of you beat me to it.

How about this:
If you are serious about CS, chances are that you have a least some “nerd” in you, whether you want to admit it or not, and whether or not you hung out with the “nerds” or “jocks” in high school. The sooner you come to terms with that, the happier you will be.

Life isn’t like High School. Life (usually) isn’t so cliquey, and if you want to be successful, you will have to get over this “nerd” vs. “jock” vs. “whatever else” mentality and realize that everyone is different, everyone is a little nerdy in their own way, and you can get along with most people in any given group, with a few choice exception.

Shoot, I played 4 years of football and baseball in high school, yet I finished my mechanical engineering degree on the Dean’s List and am not working towards my Ph.D. Does that make me nerdy? Yes. Can I still talk about sports, play sports, etc despite the fact that I am nerdy (and proud of it)? Yes.

Last, if you meet a girl who is turned off by you just because you are a CS major, then she is probably someone you don’t want to date anyway. Anyone who is that shallow isn’t worth your time. More than likely, if a girl is turned off by you, it is because of your personality, not your major.

Bottom line: If you want to do CS, then do it, and get this bull***** anti-nerd mentality out of your head. Otherwise, go major in leisure studies with all the athletes. Maybe you can sell cars after college like them if you are lucky.

I can’t tell how genuine you were when writing that but if you’re still seriously categorizing people into labels like “nerd” and “jock” you’ll have to let that go. As you progress through college you’ll find that these terms become less and less relevant.

What you need to focus on now is seriously finding out what you want to do career-wise. Personally I think computer science is a fascinating field with lots of potential- as long as you’re willing to keep up with it, as computer technology is always changing.

As far as girls are concerned- any girl that “judges” you by your major isn’t worth it at all. I’d also wager that girls like that are very few.

College and the real world are very very different than high school. My advice- let go of things like “nerds” “jocks” and labels. Focus on your interests, aptitudes, passions and your career. You don’t have to be worried about others judging you on these things.

The short answer: no.

The long answer: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Thanks, Dr. Percival Ulysses Cox

nshah9617// i lol’ed at that!

“Anyone who says no is kidding themselves.”

 • There are two kinds of people who go to college - nerds and dip****s. There comes a point in everybody’s life when they decide which one they want to be. (nerd pays better)

CS majors in general are pretty nerdy yes (as are most techie majors in my experience) and it may be a bit of a turn off for girls during college.

But once you graduate and are getting paid… things may change :P

It takes a special mind to be a programmer. In real life, I have a few guys that play in a band at some clubs after hours. One guy bikes around the world during his spare time, another a cabinet maker, a hunter, mountain climber…I am a woman manager of those guys, who probably knows latest fashion as well as my 20 year old daughter.

There are a lot of nerdy guys in the CS field, but nerds rule nowadays. CIOs are very well respected at most major firms. In today’s world, technology is often the most expensive expenditure any firm could have, and it’s also the most important, it doesn’t matter if it’s dog food company or a financial company.

Yes, people in my department are paid well and treated like valued asset to the firm. They also have the luxury of “working from home” that people in other professions may not be able to.

Be proud of being a nerd. Case in point, when the bullies in The Simpsons started calling Milhouse a nerd, he replied “I’m not a nerd, nerds are smart.”

I majored in computer science.

I graduated at the age of 39 and was a mother of 4 - still am a mother of 4 bio kids - not 39 anymore ;)

But I am hardly a nerd. And I can’t say that most of my classmates were either.

To the OP…wow you’re insecure.

To arcadefire1027…wow you like to resurrect old threads.
