Do other professions value a degree in architecture...?

i am wondering if other fields value a BArch on/around the same level as an architecture firm would? i’ve heard of people who get an arch degree and go on into something similar, but not specifically design like work in museums, restoration, etc.

and i am a architecture student at the moment.

i already know that i do /not/ want to work in a firm. so is it pointless to get a degree in architecture? i am sort of confused as to if i should continue on to the next year or not. my adviser isn’t much of a help and i know if i drop it, there is no going back. i understand it’s my choice or whatever but its important to me that all the work i put into this is appreciated later on.

nerd855, i think you should post in the general forum. Your question is more about finding what you really want out of your undergrad degree. You’re studying architecture but do not want to follow the traditional career path. I really don’t have an answer for you. It seems to me that you’re thinking about your arch degree as a training to learn a skill. I think that an undergraduate degree should have a more broader objective than just to acquire a skill to get a job. At least in theory, an undergraduate degree should be an opportunity for intellectual and personal growth, critical thinking engagement, an opportunity to learn how to learn, etc. all these abstract things that do not directly provide a tangile skill in the job market. You need to think what do you really want, like, enjoy. Good luck to you. You’re young and have plenty of time to figure things out.

My inclination is to say, it’s probably not worth it, especially as it’s a five year degree and you could probably graduate with a BA in something you liked better in four.

How far into your education are you?
