Do people aspire to be...

question: Do you think people (as children/young adults) actually aspire to be garbage men, janitors, or other blue collar professionals? Personally, I’ve never heard one say “I want to be a janitor when I grow up.”

lol it’s just something I ask myself alot…

wow… uninformed aren’t we? My friend’s dad’s son has a PHD in I think politic science and works as a cashier at a laundry cleaning business. No one is goign to wish they were janitors when they are little. It is unfortunate that people who worked hard are still put down even with their accomplishments. Another one is I spoked to a garbage man that picks up our trash every week and he has a degree in Chemical engineering. He said not only did he not have the funds to further pursue his goal of becoming an engineer but he never had the support of his family. Seriously, haven’t you ever thought about personal difficulties that prevent you from doing something? My dad came from a poor family in Korea and managed to get into the best university in Korea, but because of lack of funds and support, he wound up working at a cd shop.

I don’t know about you, but I think you’ve been growing up in a family that has fully supported your education and future goals and have the funds to do it. Not all people have parental support nor money to pursue jobs that are considered “professional”

that’s stupid, you don’t need parental support to achieve your own goals…that’s why they’re your own and about funds if someone really wanted something they could take on debt don’t be so dramatic

ummm…I didn’t make this topic to offend anybody…nor did I say that there was anything WRONG with being a janitor, garbage man, etc.
I just asked a question…no need for you to get hostile…and for your information, I am in NOT rich…9/10 I will be taking out loans if I don’t get any merit scholarships…I don’t qualify for financial aid…

vincere,
I think 1337noh4k4 makes a good point. You might say parental support is unneccessary, however, many times, we see that lack of support is the reason why many people fail. Also, you mentioned people can take out loans. That is true, however, schools cost like what these days, 30K a year or so. (just a rough estimate). Not a lot of people are going to risk their credit just for college like that. (well based on the high school i used to go to. A lot of people with straight A’s decided to not go to college because they could not get their parents to approve nor get enough money, even through loans). I’m not sure how hard it is for people to get out of loans, but I’m in around 6000 bucks in debt because UCLA did some crazy things with my financial aid and I’m barely making enough payments for my loan. It is hard to be in debt and do your studies at the same time because first you got to worry about surviving and paying your debt and study. People aren’t going to say," HEY! I KNOW! I am goign to borrow X amount of money so I can go to college and hopefully have a X job" because there is more to risk than to gain.

yo 1337noh4k4,
chill out.

When I was in preschool I wanted to be a garbage man. In fact, the teachers said I would never amount to anything because we would have to help around the classroom and I wouldn’t let anyone pick up the trash because I perceived it to be only my job. They said I couldn’t cooperate well.

Actually I have been telling my parents ever since I was 8, that I have always wanted to be a garbage collector. In fact I still do…

Luckily, for both of us, I have turned out a little more intellectually and athletically able than a garbage collector, so I am pursuing more ambitious things.

what do garbage collectors get paid hourly? not that i want to be one, but usually the “crappiest” jobs pay really good, so im just wondering.

Where I live even the most ridiculous jobs are paid extremely well. A garbage collector, who has a better name- sanitation engineer gets paid like 15-20 euro an hour. There are people in my village whose sole job is to hand paint the lines on the road get paid that much. It’s crazy. I would take one of those jobs if I could.

I hear when I was a kid I wanted to be a garbage man. Apparently when I was a kid I was really fascinated by the garbage truck when it would come into the neighborhood.

Oh well. My sister wanted to grow up to become a flower. lol.

This all went down in kindergarten I think.

i had this cool bus driver and the juniors and seniors thought it would be neat to do that someday.
i wanted to be a ghost hunter at one point

I wanted to be a junkie when I grew up. I never realized my dream!

1337noh4k4, I can assure you, over 99% of janitors/sanitary engineers, bus drivers, butchers, et al do not have degrees or PhDs.

And I can assure you, nearly half of all lower-end blue-collar workers didn’t work hard, and therefore have the job they do now.

Not everyone works like an ox, you know. Actually, hardly anyone (meaning about 10% who do, and I’m guestimating) in this “dream big, live big” world does.

I wanted to also be a professional soccer player for the Brazilian national team. My father told me I couldn’t because I was American so I threw a tantrum and cried.
