Do people dig holes?

Do people dig holes? Or do shovels dig holes? I need to write an essay about this philosophical question.

Wow. That’s a great question. Technically, the shovel digs the hole, but how does the shovel get the force needed to dig the hole. It is through the person.

An analogy: Does the gas attentant (or you, in some states) fill up the tank or is it the gas pump?

Couldn’t you also be talking about digging a hole from a psychological stand point? Your digging yourself into a hole you’ll never get out of (getting in more trouble).

^ In that case, its definitely the shovel- then you can sue the shovel company for millions and live happily ever after.

“Dig” is a verb. A shovel is an inanimate object. People dig. Shovels don’t.

people dig holes using shovels as tools to assist in the process.

“‘Dig’ is a verb. A shovel is an inanimate object. People dig. Shovels don’t.”

Dig being a verb doesn’t definitively answer the question either way. And btw the shovel is no longer inanimate if it’s wielded by a person.

“The cup is sitting on the table.”

Sitting is a verb and a cup is an inanimate object. Does the fact an inanimate object has a verb attached to it in a sentence necessarily mean that’s it’s impossible for a cup to be sitting on a table.

if the shovel could go ahead and dig the whole by itself, then thats 1 thing, but being as it just sits there by itself - and that you can dig a hole with your bare hands, then its safe to assume that you dig a whole with the aid of a shovel.

also you know that saying, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” - it applies here “shovels don’t dig holes, people dig holes.”

I thought this was going to be about jeans. Thank god.

let me be the first to suggest that you write about how these days, it’s usually machines who dig holes and so you can dodge the question

Well You can also say “the car runs.”

maybe when i was a kid

it was just some nasty fetish that i grew out of

surprisingly, NOT ALL PEOPLE dig holes

i’ve yet to come across an attractive white hole so no i don’t dig em

people dig holes… shovels are just a tool to make the job easier

i’m not nearly as superficial (or girly) as jimbob, i loved a dirty hole

Maybe the OP misspelled hoes

well said.

then what’s all that business about shovels? am i asking for it? :D

You can dig a hole with your hands, you don’t need a sholve, but you do need a hand, or arm, or limb of some sort.

…but your hands are you. your hands arn’t a “tool.” a tool is some sort of external device…

or your junk.
