I’m going to a university in Texas this fall and I’m from California. I’ve heard stories that Californians are disliked in Texas. One of my friends says she knows a guy who got beat up in a bar cause he was from California. Do things like this really happen?
Was he insulting Texas in the bar? If so it is guaranteed.
Different schools have different cultures and you should be concerned more about the school and city you will be in more than worrying about a state which stretches 900+ miles in width to make such broad generalizations. You will have different experiences living in Houston vs College Station vs Dallas vs El Paso vs Lubbock.
Many in Texas think Austin might as well be in California.

If you’re going to UT Austin, I highly doubt anyone will give you a hard time. UT is one of the best schools in the world and it attracts people from all corners of the globe - making it very diverse geographically, culturally, and so on.
Plus people may never find out you’re from California anyways unless you punctuate your sentences with “dude” and carry a longboard with you. 
Out-of-state students from California almost instantly became popular in my social circles. Many Californians have a cool and chill vibe, but I do dislike the “hypebeast/ricer” culture that is rampant in Cali. I will also make fun of you for saying “hella” just like how my Cali friends make fun of me for saying “y’all”
^and hopefully for saying Cali…
I’m a somewhat stereotypical Californian who attends school in Oklahoma. I’ve never had anyone insult me for my state of origin outside of some light hearted ribbing.
Esit: Looks like you’re going to Texas Christian next year. Don’t even worry about getting made fun of in Dallas for being from California.
When a Texan says something bad about you to your face, it is usually a compliment. Once you understand that, everthing is fine. It only took me 6 years of living there to figure that out!
Just refrain from saying “bless his/her heart”, that’s nicer way to insult someone from what I’ve heard and you will be fine.

This question is too vague. Cali and TX are big and non-homogenous states. East and west Texas are quite different, North and South Cali are very different. If they were 2 smaller and/or more homogenous states I could say something more conclusive.
No. Austinites might complain about traffic and Californians in the same breath, but you have nothing to fear. Use common sense when going out at night, but the campus area is fine and downtown is generally quite safe.

TCU is in Fort Worth which prides itself on NOT being Dallas. But Californians are safe there too.

@baktrax – People who try their very best to look like Kanye West despite lacking Kanye West type wealth. (At least that’s what hype beast culture is in Boston.)

I still consider myself a Texan. The only people I don’t like are the ones who don’t like Texas, based on stereotypes! Like the acquaintance who said, “Why does he want to go THERE?” when I told her my son would be attending UT.
Here in Florida, it’s really cute when they lower their car so much they can’t even get over the causeway. =))
