Do people reach an intellectual peak, or is intellect always increasing?

I’m not talking about knowledge, but intellect/intelligence/ability to understand and learn new things quickly.

Or do people reach a peak at one point and then experience a decline?

I heartily disagree with the old notion that you peak intellectually at 25 or so. I am far smarter today than I was in any other decade of my life. I know better how to learn and what to focus on. Nowadays, many of us feel (looking at old relatives and others,) that interest, genetics, health and luck can keep you going til sometime in your 80’s. At that point, the body tires and doesn’t have as much energy left for brain pursuits. How’s all that for a positive spin on aging?

But, personality and personal style do play a large role. Uninterested people are uninterested, at any age.

Real decline in intelligence doesn’t come until late, late, late in life.

I agree with both Looking and Philo. First there is no substitute for experience and the ability to know what works and what doesn’t with years of having done it. Secondly, I went back to grad school in my 40’s while working full time and found that I grasped the intellectual part of it as fast, if not faster than in my 20’s. Often times it is the personality and the refusal to think ‘outside the box’ that it the limiting factor, not age…

There is an empirical evidence that cognitive ability is complete at approximately 25 years of age. This doesn’t mean that you can’t learn new things, but the way you reason, your complex thoughts, and ability to solve problems will remain fairly stable after this point.

That’s not what the opening post is about.

It is about intelligence, not cognitive ability.

Lol, wut? Intelligence refers to your cognitive ability, unless your specifically talking about the intelligence quotient. Even then IQ measures your cognitive ability.
