Do people sometimes bring up senior prom in college?

I did not go to my senior prom because I did not have a date.

I know it’s not like such a big deal in my life or anything, but I was just wondering if I will likely get into future awkward/embarrassing situations in college when people somehow raise up senior prom stories and I have to tell them that I did not go to mine…

you may one day be in such a situation but its not a “hot topic” on campuses. Don’t sweat it.

no .

People might talk about it sometime. People might talk about essentially anything sometime.

Just avoid saying anything if you don’t want people to know. But I bet nobody cares if you tell them you didn’t go.

No, I don’t think you’ll get into an awkward situation.

I’ve talked about it, but in the context of joking about how horrible it was. It’s funny now.

It won’t be a big deal in college, but when you start going on job interviews it will be an issue.

I can’t tell you how many times I had to explain my Senior Prom experience during a job interview - eh, the worst!

Yeah, it might come up.
But so what? Who gives a flying rat?

I didn’t, and I know a bunch of others who didn’t go. Not a single person is going to judge you for that. You might actually meet someone that went to a high school so small that they didn’t have a prom.

While I didn’t go to mine, that’s because practically no one went (tiny, tiny high school)… well those who went were there for an hour and then went out to bars/clubs immediately after. It was a joke of a prom.

Yes. I mean, it’s something people talk about. I didn’t go to prom either, though. It’s not a big deal. Just say you weren’t one for school functions if you don’t want to admit you couldn’t find a date.

Yes. Everyone will laugh and point fingers at you in a cruel fashion.

Don’t get me started about what they’ll do if they find out you weren’t class president.

This is a non-issue. I’ve never heard anyone, except my fiance, even talk about it. If it does come up, prom is generic enough that you could make something up if you are really that insecure about it, but I genuinely don’t think anyone will judge you for not going.

My fiance didn’t get to go to his because he got a completely outrageously terrible speeding ticket just before and had to use his prom money (and then some) to pay the ticket. He is lucky he wasn’t charged with a felony. It was just bad. He has a lot more to be embarrassed about than you do!

At my university, we’re required to stand on a stage and tell the entire freshman class about our senior proms in obscene detail. Failing to do so will get you immediately expelled.

Thats the only reason I went to Senior and Junior Prom, because I thought I might regret not going one day. I’m still waiting almost 5 years later and that day still hasn’t come…

^That’s because you went. Nobody who goes gives a crap later. It’s the people that don’t go and wonder what it might have been like, if anybody at all, that care.

I think you started this thread to get pity.

I had one girl ask me why I didn’t go to prom and after I told her my story, she just felt bad for me and we moved on to talking about something else…killer tomatoes eating people.

I think it’s really weird that you’re planning conversations with future peers in advance… so what if you didn’t go to prom… do you really think anyone cares at all??

P.S. I didn’t go to my own high school’s prom and I went to another school’s prom with someone in one of my grandfather’s suits because I didn’t have time to go rent a tux because I didn’t think I’d want to go to any prom. I’m 59% sure this hasn’t adversely hindered any relationships I’ve made so far… or stopped any from happening…

I didn’t go, it’s come up once or twice in conversations, but it’s not awkward at all. It just comes and goes like any other aspect in life.

You see, the prom is significant in the sense that for those who attend, it’s their first grand event of that type, and for several people, it may be their only chance at such an event. Opportunities to have similar experiences later on in life will pop up if you set yousrelf up to be in such a situation. That is - don’t lead a low-profile life, get yourself involved in lots of things that are fast-growing with huge milestones, etc.

As for why I didn’t go - I found the prospect of asking out anyone way too intimidating. It’s always be reinforced in my mind that the “best” that can happen is they “just” say no. To be honest, it’s something I still struggle with, and I can be hella plastered with alcohol and still hold my inhibitions close to 100%.

A few of my friends (both male and female) in college were talking about their proms and who they went with. I didn’t end up going to mine and I just shrug it off like it’s no big deal because it ISN’T. Don’t sweat it, no one will think any less of you trust me :)
