Additional info:
applying to Taft
rec letter from the current headmaster
Thanks in advance!!

not unless it’s clear that they they know the kid really, really well.

Yeah, it depends…
lets say you don’t really know the headmaster but you kinda just got him to write a recommendation, then that won’t help
whereas if you have grown up with him and he has known you for a while as a person it will help…
But, also are you sure they wrote you a rec or did they just say that because headmasters meet with a lot of people, like their friends they have known because they want them to write recs. but in the end the reguraly just say they will and they don’t cause they can only write recs. for so many people…
But, just to make it clear don’t count on the rec. in any way as a sign of acceptance

The current headmaster is recommending you? You’re pretty much guaranteed a spot…

I would disagree

ditto.

These days doesn’t hold as much weight as it used to. They just make a call once the decisions are in the mail to tell the alum that the student isn’t getting a spot. Those calls each year are numerous.

If the Taft Head is writing his own AO about you, I maintain that it doesn’t mean much of anything; it sounds like a social nicety, a favor to Mom or Dad. If the Head felt that strongly about you, he’d drop his own email to the AO that would go in your file. An actual recommendation smells weird to me.

Yeah, I am geussing the head master is a friend of your parents or something and your dad/mom asked him… so I wouldn’t say its gonna help you very much if at all

As long as his records are in good standing, he has the advantage. If he bombed the ssat and has crappy grades then ExieMIT has it right.

Yeah, but then again you gotta imagine how many parents ask the head master to write a letter…And really the head master is not in charge of admissions so its not nearly as helpful as the head of admissions writing you a letter

In general though (not referring to a headmaster’s recommendation), I would think that if you are a qualified student, and the alumni writing you a recommendation letter is very involved/very financially generous to that school, that would make an impact.

Yes, I agree w/ Mayhew and a headmaster rec means you know him well enough to ask for his help.
