Do SAT scores make a huge difference?

As in, if I have an average high school transcript, GPA, ECs, etc, and a really good SAT score, will my choices of schools significantly rise? Say, from a good candidate for Pitt or Penn State to a good candidate for Carnegie Mellon/etc?

Your chances of getting in will rise of course, but it can’t really make up for grades all that much. Getting high sats cant hurt… but I think CMU is more focused on GPA than SATs.
