Do schools recruit for Journalism?

I am a writer at my school paper, and frankly a good one, and I am interested in writing for the paper at whatever school I go to. My question is, can I use my skill to help get me into schools or get some financial aid?

There may be some independent journalism scholarships from local/national newspapers, but I don’t know of any schools who offer journalism scholarships. As far as recruiting, I don’t think so…unless you write a weekly column for the New York Times or something. However, I bet you could send in some of your writing samples with your application and I bet that may strengthen your app.

Submitting supplemental printed articles could help your admissions if they are of high caliber. And I don’t doubt that there are both outside and institutional merit scholarships for journalism; but need based FA will not be affected by your talents.

Try Drake University. Their journalism department is huge and at one time they offered scholarships. There is a huge magazine publisher in Des Moines so internships are plentiful.

Recruited? Unlikely, at least at top schools. Less well known schools may be interested in you to the point of merit aid, but in general, this is an excellent (though not necessarily unique) EC. Your best bet is to pursue journalism outside of your school as well and attempt to get published or win awards.
