Do schools teach Roman Numerals anymore?

I was going over a lease with an employee of a client…bright enough college educated girl in her mid-twenties. A long list of items was numbered in Roman Numerals. She could not read them…not even the “easy” ones like (xxxv). (I admit that I kind of got lost at xli.) Do schools just not teach kids to read Roman Numerals at all anymore? Should they?

My daughter learned them in grammar school in California and recently remarked about how none of her friends in Michigan know them. Of course they should teach roman numerals! How else would we know which superbowl it is??? (As for me, I’m glad my daughter’s around to consult!)

No, they do not. I think they should, I have become confused in several situations when things were marked with numerals. Everyone else seemed to know them though, made me feel a little stupid.

If anyone wants to be a lawyer, or anything else where you deal with very long documents, you really need to learn them. Sections and subsections grow so long that you need to use Roman numeral, after you’ve used arabic numbers, capital letters and small letters.

Well, I was raised in Michigan (albeit private schools) and I learned roman numerals in grade school.

Then again, I see the horrific grammar that so many college students have and I wonder if they’re teaching that still either.

No, I don’t think they are teaching much grammar at all.

Roman numerals have gone the way of sentence diagrams? Oh no…

What about Latin root words?

no roman numerals at school…one of the many things I decided they needed to know along the way…Not many uses, but when it’s there, it’s nice to know how to read them. I had to laugh a couple of years ago when it was Superbowl 40 … (XL) …That X before the L really threw a lot of people for a loop!!!

I teach Roman numerals, grammar and Latin/Greek roots to my 6th grade English classes.

I learned Roman numerals as a kid in math class though.

I love the superbowl references. it’s the most common place to see roman numerals these days :)

My Ds both learned them in elementary school in GA, don’t know if they’re still teaching it here though.
How could you do a complex outline without them?

They were still teaching them in NY, when D and S1 went through the elementary schools (D is a college soph. and S1 is a h.s. jr. now). And S2 is learning them in Kindergarten - but it’s Montessori, so that doesn’t help re NY State.

Definitely, emphatically, sadly not teaching any grammar. The kids only seem to learn it backwards, as it were, when they start studying foreign languages.

As for root words…I did not actually learn these as a child, but in 6th grades, all my kids have had weekly root words to study…this week is “juv” as in juvenile, rejuvinate, etc. The kids aren’t fond of learning these, but I’m very glad they are!

Last night my 17 year old (!) was taking these three online grammar quizzes. He’s in AP English for goodness sakes and the stuff he was doing we learned in about 7th grade. I got out my old high school grammar book… He’d never seen such a thing.

How will they ever know what year a movie was made?

The motion picture industry has always used roman numerals in their films to denote the year of release - used to drive me crazy!

We did roman numerals in elementary school. (I’m 19 now.)

I recall a student asking what was this “page Ai, Yai, Yai!!” which turned out to be
preface page iii.

[The Internet Movie Database (IMDb)](http://www.imdb.com)

We don’t need no stinkin’ Roman numerals! (I actually used to love trying to figure out the year made before the copyright card left the screen!)

I learned them as a kid in social studies, when we studied Ancient Rome. :)

Hate to say it, but outlining is not taught much anymore either. It’s all graphic organizers these days.

I teach Roman Numeral outlining, too! Gee, I’m starting to feel like you guys would approve of my teaching choices! :D

By the way, lest anyone think I’m posting on CC while teaching… I’ve been off for three weeks due to a medical issue. Heading back to work late next week for more Latin roots, Roman numerals, grammar and outlines (oh, and graphic organizers, too.)
