Do snowbirds close up their houses for hurricane conditions?

Our dear friends were in MA for a few weeks and had to leave there to go TO Naples to secure their home. Do most people who travel north for the summer/early fall secure their houses for hurricane conditions before they depart? It worries me that they are headed into the storm.

my parents always did… but some communities have HOA restrictions that do not permit you to keep storm shutters up for months at a time.

We have a house in Tampa and I have a house manager who cares for the house on a weekly basis when I head north for the summer. I leave it really clean and organized but I don’t do anything to prepare for storms. I actually want it to appear as if I’m there so I don’t change anything about the street-side appearance. I received word this afternoon from my manager that he moved all our outdoor furniture into the garage and he shut down all the gas lanterns. We have hurricane rated windows and doors so shouldn’t need to do anything special to protect them. I can’t imagine keeping up with that house without some kind of local help. Things come up regardless of weather conditions.
